Playing Chess
by Robert James Hanrahan
I started playing chess because my father was really into it. I remember him playing with his friends and writing all the games down on paper and analyzing the games later on. I started when I was about 8 or 9, and so I started reading some books and the best one was one from nimzowitsch "My Sytem": a really nice and crazy book, like the author Aron. I read also books by Capablanca, Alekine and many others.
When I got to Australia, where I was born in 1969, I met many friends and started playing with them. I think we spent most of out time playing chess, it was like a fever.
Of course, being a musician I spent more time on my guitar, but the game of chess was so challaging that we were always playing it. Nowadays I play on-line at a site called gameknot and I met many interesting people with whom I sometimes talk with.
I think that chess is not just a game, it's so personal and does not involve any kind of luck, therefore it's one of the best games ever! I also think that playing chess at an higher level can lead to madness.
That all for the moment
cheers to all
