Re:Links for beginners - 2007/06/11 20:42 The homepage of Chess Teaching has been mentioned before, but if you are looking for Chess Lessons the Chess Lessons Index may be a better entry point.

Re:Links for beginners - 2007/07/15 19:52 We had some technical problems today, but they have been solved by now.
All the chess lessons are accessible again.

About one lesson a week will be added.

Re:Links for beginners - 2007/07/24 03:05 Although probably mentioned in the websites listed above, it may be an idea to jot down key elements of chess.

Ill mention a few here:

Always aim to control the center by means of advancing central pawns or knights...

Develop all back row pieces as quickly as possible...

Never move the same piece during development (unless you are forced to by an attack)...

Castle early...

Never trade off valuable pieces for minor ones (it is good to stick to this rule until you have a clear understanding of the ideas used that involve breaking this rule)

Theres a few pointers from me, hope they help

Re:Links for beginners - 2007/09/17 15:47 I agree with this posting...
If you need to practice your game go to
http://kakkle.com/chessgame/FVPlus/chess_members.php
here you can play against a computer or start your own clan so you learn with whomever you cvhoose. There are also puzzles which allow you to figure out how to learn quick checkmates.
Best of luck

Re:Links for beginners - 2007/11/29 13:57 I wouldn't call myself a beginner but I dont see the relevance of the center. I understand why I wouldn't want a knight on the edge of the board but I dont understand the whole concept of 'battling for the center' someone please explain

Re:Links for beginners - 2008/01/11 16:58 i understand what you mean jonny a very reasonable view.

If player A has complete control of the center, the he/she will able to mobilize their pieces in such a way that it can threatan a castled or uncastle king.

Also, having the center allows a better range of play as you have greater flexibility, you will often see advanced players moving their rooks to the 'd' and 'e' files to increase such pressure.

Cutting through an opposing players middle section of the board makes it very difficult to defend a castles king.
I am sure there are more reasons, it does depend on the an individuals style of play but what i said may dserve as basic and generic advice

Hope this helps

Re:Links for beginners - 2008/11/30 19:33 There are so many resources on the internet for learning chess but one that I really like is the Exeter Chess Club site

http://www.exeterchessclub.org.uk/index2.html

There is a wealth of information there.

Re:Links for beginners - 2008/12/17 19:19 freechess.org is an interesting place to go to play, it's more visually enticing if you download a client. All free!

They have "Bots" that work through different games, the bots analyze different moves of different topics. I've only viewed a few, and they have all been entertaining. They're lecture style, and go for about 30-45 minutes. The bots are even kind enough to give you time to go get a drink or a snack before the lecture begins. They advertise themselves in the lobby.

There was an interesting game, where the guy who created the program got to play against a chess grandmaster (in which they concluded at a draw) and he went through the different possible lines after creating an interesting line of play with a pawn sacrifice, that stifled white's play. Although, probably none of that made too much sense... I just really suggest going there.

http://www.chessgames.com/

You can run through games by openings, players, dates, # of moves, etc, etc. You get to view games that renowned players have played. They're very interesting and contain a lot of good material. I've been visiting it to see different openings, I've been trying to work on e4 openings and responses to the variety of options that black has.

Anyway! That's my little contribution. Good thread though, I felt silly for going to chesskids.com, since I'm hopefully not considered a child anymore... but it was interesting.
