Lose right to castle vs. lose a pawn? - 2008/01/30 01:18 I've got a question. Guess it is a beginner's question. I've been looking at the Scotch Game (1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4). According to what I read 3... d6 (which results in a Philidor Defense transposed) is not recommended because after it leads to 4. dxe5 dxe5 5. Qxe8+. From what I can tell Black must then take the Q with K and thus lose the right to castle but retain the e5 pawn. An alternative is 5...Nxe8 6. Nxd5 which loses the d5 pawn but retains the right to cancel.

Either way White has the advantage. But from Black's perspective does it go without saying that losing the right to castle is the lesser evil than being a pawn down at this stage of the game?

Those are the kinds of questions I'm not sure how to weigh. Any help for me here?
Thanks

p.s. In any case 3... d6 wasn't a good move!

Lose right to castle vs. lose a pawn? - 2008/01/30 01:45 With Queens off the board, I would suspect that losing the right to castle is the lesser evil. As pieces get traded, the pawn advantage gets larger.

I believe in his "Chess the Easy Way", Reuben Fine wrote that it is usually worth a pawn to prevent your opponent from castling. I don't think that his guideline is applicable in this case.

Lose right to castle vs. lose a pawn? - 2008/01/30 03:27 3... d6 is not necessarily a bad move, it's what you move later; usual move is 3... exd4. After 4. dxe5, the better move is 4... Nxe5. In this position, losing the right to castle is slightly better than losing a pawn, but both variations are 'slightly' losing. While we can't do much better, GMs look for such slight opportunities.

Re:Lose right to castle vs. lose a pawn? - 2008/08/19 14:20 in the opening variation you gave, NxQ isn't playable as you do lose a pawn for no sufficiant gain. So KxQ is the move that should be played. In that variation, the game is in whites favour but as the queens are gone its down to sharp play for black. exd4 should have been played as it solves alot of problems for black.
