Very nice wiki site for opening theory. - 2008/08/22 08:57 Dear all,

I would like to recommend you this site:

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Opening_theory_in_chess

For us beginners, I think it is a gold mine! You can use it to navigate virtually any opening, and the beauty of it is that you get, move by move, an explanation of why a particular move is made. This (again, for us beginners) is much better than a standard chess databases, where you have access to millions of games, but you don’t necessarily understand the why of each move.

Hope this helps improving our games!

Cheers,

Andrea

Very nice wiki site for opening theory. - 2008/08/22 17:15 i had a quick view over the petroff defence and the london system and it doesnt have much (if any material), however for the first 2-4 moves it explains but thats about it. the optional homework is quite good tho, except the 4th homework exercise puzzle number 1, as i cant see the mate...

Its a good site to sample openings tho, but it seems to be an updated notation version of http://www.eudesign.com/chessops/ch-clear.htm

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_opening is probably good to sample an opening, after you have found what you want to play.

I will most certainly go through that site soon as I am -due to time constraints- not restricted anymore to 'quick jumps' into the fascinating world of chess

Thank you, Andrea!

Re:Very nice wiki site for opening theory. - 2008/09/20 22:49 Funnily enough I found myself going over that site a couple of nights ago and it proved a great deal of help, though not all of the lines furnish you with explanations — as Kev_ofla pointed out. Still, a very excellent starting point and springboard for a complete novice like myself!
