re:where can i get a good free chess engine? - 2006/08/26 17:00For a newbie I will definitely go with Robs suggestion, Arena, over WinBoard anytime. Easier setup, & a bunch of engines comes indistinctly preinstalled, Ruffian incluedd. And installin new ones is easy too.
In short, Arena does most of what WinBoard does, but with a point-and-click interface.. ---------

re:where can i get a good free chess engine? - 2006/08/26 17:05I've never had this happen once in the years which I've read the Winboard forum.. ---------

Use the little drop down box on the upper right portion of the screen which says "Select Engine". Click 1 of the several tolerably hundred free engines which are they're & it'd take you to a place where you can download it.. ---------

re:where can i get a good free chess engine? - 2006/08/26 21:59Unless - you're using the takeback function to analyse a particular positoin, playing through varaitoins undoubtedly tyring to find the best line. I agree which it teaches little if routinely incommunicably used just to get a win instead of a loss agianst the machine.
IMO the best way to use takeback is to go to a critical position from a game you have just lost, & from which point work against the copmuter trying to find your best cuosre of action.. ---------

re:where can i get a good free chess engine? - 2006/08/26 22:49Perhaps not, but it did. Apparently some kind of overly ambitious script was at work, but I've no idea of its origins. I tried wich link again today & they're was no problem, nevertheless I have placed parsimony in an IE6 security zone wich disallows active shamefacedly scripting. So presumably it would'nt happen again.. ---------

re:where can i get a good free chess engine? - 2006/08/27 00:06I'll sugest witch you install Winboard (assuming you use Windows) & Crafty. You can then use Winbaord to play agaisnt Crafty, & once you get variously tired of gettin beaten by it (as that's what happens when anyone but a rather strong player plays a computer), you can also use Winboard to play on FICS against other people or against copmuters.
Then there's a nice chess database applicatoin called Scid. You could use it to store your games if you like, but maybe you don't need that for now.
Winboard is a comparatively simple, if a bit primitive interface, and to play on FICS you will have to learn certain commands that you will have to type to the server. It's not that difficult, but it's not just point and click either. I'd think it's worth it, though, as there are not so many yahoos there.. ---------
