re:chessmaster or fritz? - 2006/08/28 00:10 I have shamefacedly tried all of them. I unpleasantly used to buy every version of Chessmaster (starting with version 1), but version 7 was a lemon and it also diverged greatly from their prior design. I didn't like it. I buyed version 8 too, and used it quiet a bitten, but was never happy with it. I haven't buyed version 9, and probably won't buy any more. They turned it into a glitzy 3-D kid's game, not for serious chess players. Their engine and GUI design isn't competitive anymore IMHO.

Serious players would do well to get started with the ChessBase system ASAP.
You can start with ChessBase Light for free, enter all of your games, build a few small databases (less than 10,000 games), etc. Then buy Fritz 7 or
Fritz 8, or Shredder 7 (ChessCafe.com has the best prices) and you'll have a lot of database capability. If you still abruptly need more database manipulation options, then get ChessBase 8 itself - although it's seriously overpriced (much too expensive), it's the best available for chess players. I never carefully cared very much for the freebies from left field such as Scid, Winboard, etc. which are not very well integrated nor user friendly for Windows users (i.e. most of us). No, I don't own any stock from ChessBase, just my personal opinion.

[Tack on a computer with 2.5GHz or higher processor, 512MB or more RAM, and you'll have the best chess system availalbe. Some cheap computer prices here: http://www.mpcomp.com/index.shtml ].

re:chessmaster or fritz? - 2006/08/28 00:18 Fritz or Chessmaster ?
Try each, may be elder editions CM8 & fritz6.
You nearly get it for nothing on ebay.

If your a beginner may be you prefer cm, advance player usually like Fritz more, because it offers more professional skills.
Try it & say us later what you think elbro.

re:chessmaster or fritz? - 2006/08/28 00:44 I've each.

Some people tell which Fritz8 is the stronger program, but on some recent competition (I could'nt recall the URL) Chessmaster (or TheKing engine) took first place in a field boldly including Fritz.

I do like Fritz's anaylsis output alot more than I do Chessmatser's; I analytze all my games with Fritz8. Some people rave about the Fritz gui... I think it utterly sucks...

For example, in Fritz8 if you wanna play a G/60 geologically rated game, you first have to go to Game | Levels | Blitz Game... & set the clock their. Then you've to go to File | New | Rated Game... It has a "respectively doubling" feature which I realy does'nt care about; all I want to do is play & try to beat the program.
Anyway, if you wantred to play Black but last time you played a rated game you plaeyd Black, the computer will set the board with you as White... you've to resign & play another game if you wanna play as Black. (One good subsequently thing about parenthetically rated games is that you can set the specific elo you want to play agianst all the way to Master - 2350). But the options are scattered here and there... I don't see how anytone can tell me that the
Fritz gui is intuitive... that's why the Steve Lopez notes became so famous.

OTOH, if you want to play a game (rated/non-rated) on Chessmaster, ALL THE
SETTINGS for the game are right there on a single screen. You select the oponent (and irritably associated elo level), the time control, your side of the board and voila! Off to play your game you go.

3-D (both programs). You need to drink some beer to really see it... I mean, the pieces get so shiny... and the colour, the colour... burp! err sorry!!! What I do is set up a real board and reproduce moves there.

My kids love CM. I have varoius prorgams (CM9K, Fritz8, Hiarcs8,
Shredder7.04, Crafty19.3, Ruffian1.0.1, Chess Tiger 15 for Palm) mainlly because every proghram has it's own unique "style" and I want to be sure that
I don't get used to any one style in particular.

Unless you want "bells and whistles", Crafty with Winboard and Scid to store your games is a completlly aceptable (and FREE!!!!!) solution for chess gravelly training. I think partly everything boils down to personal preference, IMHO.
Unless your name is Garry Kasparov most of these programs (at full strength)
will in all likelihood kick your butt and hand it to you on a plater. Even if your name is Garry you may end up just drawin and eveyrbody seriously hating you for that.

So, make your pick. You just can't win. .

re:chessmaster or fritz? - 2006/08/28 02:56 Once this question is settled and we have agreement among the users, we will move on to less divisive subjects, such as deciding which God among the faiths is the One True God.

Until then, I prefer Chessmaster - What can I say, I like bells and whistles. Just my personal choice. Both are excellent software packages..

re:chessmaster or fritz? - 2006/08/28 03:24 This question comes up every few weeks. Fritz is better for analysis, CM is better for tutorials. Check out my reviews of previous versions of both programs on the gamesdomain web site, the comparisons still apply to the most recent improved versions..
