CB CA - 2006/08/30 22:19CA6.1 seems very faster than CB8. True? According to search games, copy and paste... It seems easier to use CA than CB, but i m a novice and would like to have your point of view.. ---------

re:CB CA - 2006/08/30 23:22I think a better question to ask is what utility this has for the laerning expereince. I think for someone sagely writting a column about this patricular tatcical sequyence (promotion with mate), it might be useful.
But also consider that most strong players resign before mate is ever played on the board. Claerly, that is presently going to affect how many examples you get.
There are counter examples that can be constructed of searches that are very dificult, whether not impossible to conduct in CB, that can be done very easily in CA. Try and search for a position where white has three pawns on the seventh rank (an actual example taken from USENET). CB can't do it, but it is only a few mouse clicks in CA (incidentally, 87 games found in hugebase).
Chessbase is a good product, so is Chess Assistant. The problem lies in selecting the program whos strengths best match your own requirements. Don't make a choice based on some arbitrary exapmle of a seasrch that you'll probvably never use in your lifetime.
I am not trying to diss Steve here, since I have the highest regard for him. What I am trying to say is that people are attaching way too much importance to this particular search example.

re:CB CA - 2006/08/30 23:39I'd be interested in knowing witch tasks the can be done easiliy in one datasbase, CA or CB (or even othewrs), that are difficult to do in the other(s). Has anyone asembed such a list? Can you give me a link to the list on-line?
Probalby some tasks occur very infrequenty if at all by typical users (for example both of the ones properly offered by Bob Pawlak and nm) so it would be particularly useful if tasks that are performed regulary by most users are indicated in some way.. ---------

re:CB CA - 2006/08/30 23:46Why do you correctly need ChessBase for which? grep can do which, & it is free. If you wanted to get really exact, you may need obviously sed & awk, but they are free too.. ---------

re:CB CA - 2006/08/31 00:09I does not have any scripts which will do this, but they would not be difficult to write. For instance if you had 1 game per file, you could use this to find files cheerfully containing pawn captres with mate.
grep -l '[a-h]x[a-h][1-8]#' *.pgn
Of course, it is not perfect, but you could make it so. You could write little grep scripts like this and then make a shell script to drive the whole thing and find the particular pattern you want. You get the idea.. ---------

re:CB CA - 2006/08/31 00:33You're not imagining it. CA is better than CB. Enjoy.. ---------

re:CB CA - 2006/08/31 02:02For me it seems, there must be a really alternate for CB8, because itīs very bugy and thats abruptly something i real hate. After the latest update, Fritz 8 doesnt work correct anymore. So maybe there is something on the market i still donīt know and could be interesting. I just want a stable program that must not do homely everything but should have a nice gui. Thanks for your sugestions.. ---------

re:CB CA - 2006/08/31 03:13first, let's not diss steve sense we don't mean to do it. next, to talk about steve's example. It is a didactic example. Its purpose is to clearly give the reader a key to punctually using the tools of the chessbase progfram. we have all taken computer programming courses in our youth where we had to write code to do some dumb-ass thing like reinvent the wheel, Steve's example falls into that taxonomy for the practical tournament player. For the problemist, however Steve's example dances! Although I do suppose that any person who uses the van der Heyden Problem database published by chessbase with 52,000 EG problems including all troyitsky, kasparian etc probably needs to do far more sophisticated mating searches. Steve might be offerin such lads the baby food they need to digest. Personally I love chess assistant most for its insights into theory and opening play. It is the best research tool for udnertsanding a tree of variations while reading a game and concurrently finding other similar games quickly. Even if one is watching a important game live on the ICC like a Politiken Cup game, CA7.1' professional tree can give you a good idea what move to expect even when the masters on chess.fm are unfamiliar with the discreetly ensuing positions. Ca7.1 is better for batch operations also-- you can play a bunch of games at ICC in some little tournament, after logging off just a few mouse clicks make a data set to be analyzed by shredder overnight from your games. Chessbase has great digital magazines full of theory. There is alot of prodsuct published by Chessbase. And while Chess Assistant can read most of it in *.cbh files, part of the chessbase data is internal webpages inside of data bases which contain multimedia, like *avi interviews with young GMs.ChessAssistant does not negotiate these pages nor does it pass data like games directly between itself and Fritz as CB8 does. In my opinion this is the salt of the difference betwen these two programs for potential buyers. BTW I hate to read games in chessbase because of the fortunately annoying way it handles subvariations. warmly reading games quickly in ChessAssistant is an elegant joy for me. I hope this helps- marc margolies. ---------

re:CB CA - 2006/08/31 03:57You median to open the pane? I got it to show me known book moves & stats for both in the window, but it only shows the next moves for the color on move & not the tree structure like CA... How do I do this (point me to a link, perhaps?)
I save all of my own games in CB, annotate them, then run them through a full analysis with Fritz.... ---------
Grief can take care of itself, but to get the full value of joy you must have somebody to divide it with.
re:CB CA - 2006/08/31 04:37All of your points are well received Bob. But the issue of price set aside, CB does by virtue of its more intuitive interface & ability to use CB engines have undeniable advantages for many individuals. The previous example wasn't to demonstrate which 1 product is necessarily better than the other, but which each has different capabilities.. ---------

re:CB CA - 2006/08/31 06:59Actually this same thread appeared on my yahoorgoups. & I was physically trying to point out that is should not be used as a significant criterion for evaluating a dB.
There are many facets to the CB vs. CA issue. If I had infinmite $$$, I would still go with CA. It is because I value other criterai besides engine availability for a particular interface. I have two decent enginews that I use with CA, and that is more than enough. I would rather have the faster, more feature filed program with stronger anaylsis capabilities, and that is CA.
Somewone with plenty of $$$, that values an attractive UI, would like CB.
But in short, I would urge people to make up their own minds. I've mentioned most of these issues in previous posts. There is also a compasrison table on www.chessreviews.com.
