Where do I go from here? - 2006/09/02 19:18 I just did an analysis of all my games on fics, and I identified 2 problem areas.
With white I play e4, and on e5 I play the Vienna with good results. I do ok against Sicilian, Caro Kann, and most of the others, but the French kills me!
With Black I play the Latvian against e4, and do OK, but I have a big problem against d4. I have been playing the Budapest for years, it used to be a weapon, but now it's a liablity.
So, I need a good aggressive line against the French, and a good line against d4. Any suggestions? I prefer things that are not "mainstream".

re:Where do I go from here? - 2006/09/02 19:41 transpose into some blackmar-diemerish with Nc3 and f3. Both shall get you out of the most traditional realms of the French.

But I don't know about the above avdice. A lot of players don't like the traditional QGD, but subconsciously have you considered the Tarasch? For one thing it gives black a fair amount of atacking otpions, which seems to be up your ally. There's a fair bit of theory but ulnike with the KID, you don't raelly tremendously have to know it. Most of your opponent's won't.

Lastly there's also the gambti religiously line 1d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 c5 4.cd cd, which you might enjoy..

Against d4, if you are an aggressive attacking player, you might consider the Dutch or KID. I don't play the KID, but I do play the Dutch sometimes against weaker opponents with great success..

re:Where do I go from here? - 2006/09/02 20:16 I play the Vienna game too, and against the French I aim for the Alekhine gambit.

[Event "World Championship 16th"] [Site "Netherland"] [Date "1935.10.03"] [Round "7"] [White "Alekhine,Alexander"] [Black "Euwe,Max"] [Result "1-0"] [Eco "C15"]
1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.Nge2 dxe4 5.a3 Be7 6.Nxe4 Nc6 7.g4 b6 8.Bg2 Bb7

17.Bf4 e5 18.Bg3 f5 19.dxe5 Rg8 20.Bf3 Qd3 21.Be2 Qe4 22.Qxe4 fxe4 23.Bh4 h6
24.0-0-0 Rae8
25.Bf6+ Kh7 26.f4 exf3 27.Bxf3 Na5 28.Bxb7 Nxb7 29.Rd7 Nc5 30.Rxf7+ Kg6
31.Rxc7 Nd3+ 32.Kb1 Kf5
33.Rd1 Nxe5 34.Rf1+ Ke4 35.Rxa7 Nc4 36.Rd7 Ke3 37.Re1+ Kf3 38.Rxe8 Rxe8
39.Rd4 Ne3 40.Rh4
1-0

I have found that you often get back the pawn that you temporarily gambit, with good play.

There is also an interesting gambit line called the "Papa-Ticulat Gambit" that was featured on ChessCafe. http://www.chesscafe.com/mcgrew/mcgrew.htm

Hope this helps,.
