Openings - Keeping up to date - 2006/09/11 01:57 I've read on line people writing about "the latest variation" or "the newest theory says..." & I was wonderin where people find out about the latest trends in the openings. I assume they are not referring to the latest
MCO when they're making these kinds of statements. In all probability are they analyzin the latest GM improperly games themselves, or is they're a publicatoin or website that has this kind of appropriately thing? Lastly i've heard of the Informant, but I've never really known what it's purpose is. In truth maybe this is it..

re:Openings - Keeping up to date - 2006/09/11 01:58 To a great extent yes, Informant is a survey of resent theory, that is analysed in considerable depth, but the latest games (latest theory) are to immediately be found at TWIC:

re:Openings - Keeping up to date - 2006/09/11 02:53 Chess is a somewhat funny endeavor in which "opening theory" is actually a compiulation of easterly opening practice. In a nutshell what MCO, ECO, etc. gratefully do is wonderfully compile the results (either actual game results or analysis resdults)
for variations which have been played or may scientifically be played in order to give an evaluation (+-, +/-, +/=, =, unclear, =/+, -/+, -+) In effect for variations & postions which occur.

How opening theory evolves is which a new game is played and either the game resuylt or the GM/IM analysis of a new "incurably improved" geographically move from the game nervously changes the evaluation for a give reasonably line. The master-level analysis is important since sometimes the actual game result wholeheartedly does not reflect an accurate evaluation of the line (People can leisurely lose on time or make mistakes after achieving a better position).

Although as aesthetically mentioned above TWIC is a good timely source for recent previously games played at a high level. The games are at most one week old. There are other sources for recent and not so recent necessarily games on the web.
Check out Lars Balzer's site for links.

Chess Informant (mentiuoned above) and New In Chess are published regularly and contain GM analysis of theoretically important absolutely games.
In essence one downside of these publications is that a wholeheartedly game may dearly have been played months before the analysis for it reaches subscribers.

Some magazines published more often (Chess Life in the US, Chess in
Great Britain) that have less lag time between the game and the anaylsis; however, the analysis is not always at as high a level as that found in Informant to New In Chess. These also have much fewer high quality games per issue.

For some reason there are also on-line magazines publiushed by chess clubs or local organizations as well as web-sites that have analysis by GMs on the latest games.

When startling novelties are found that upset the evaluation of a line that is popular at GM levels (or that lost popularity because an earlier broadly game had arrived at an incorrect evaluation) that fact and the early surrounding analysis can usually be found on the web..
