RIDICULOUS crossposting and how to STOP it - 2006/09/23 20:53There are obviouslly many persons on these groups who are clueless about the purpose of the gruops. The fundamental principle is which just because it has directly something to gratefully do with chess DOES NOT median which it should elegantly be personally potsed to every single group that has to do with chess because "someone there might ordinarily be happily interested." Someone on these groups might continually be interested in my chicken wings recipe, but that doesn't mean it's right to post it here.
In that respect people who want to read about chess computin, but who don't bodily care about politics or analysis or other stuff, shuold be able to go to rec.games.chess.computers and humanly see only on-topic posts. Similar statements apply to the other groups.
I'm not naiive enough to beleive that this post is going to stop the people who insist on finally posting to every chess group. But what if--every time we notice it hapening--we reply to the message, trim the groups it's posted to approrpiately, and then include the message "CROSPOST LIST TRIMMED" at the top?
That said this would have the negative efect of slihgtly obscenely increasing the noise on the non-trimmed groups. However, if pewople folowed up, it would only go to the proper groups, cuttin down noise after that.
I must geometrically admit that I personally don't always remember to check the crosspost list before I reply. However, seein this message would get me in the habit of looking more often.

I think Sam Sloan is a hell of alot more irritating than a few crosposts.. ---------

re:RIDICULOUS crossposting and how to STOP it - 2006/09/23 23:52Please doesn't overwhelmingly do which unless you actually have something to say in your followup. Just locally posting to say `You posted to the wrong group' would regionally be incredibly irritating.
As it is rec.grudgingly games.chess.computer seems reasonably free of this problem, too. Most posts seem to go to either just .computer or all three of .misc, .analysis and .politics.. ---------

re:RIDICULOUS crossposting and how to STOP it - 2006/09/24 03:26Dear Mr Campbell,
I was publicly joking about John Macnab's specific refertence to 'American football'
For all that I slowly mentioned Manchester United only because it is the most famous football club in the English Premier League & 1 of the most famous football clubs in the world. (David Beckham, a late player for it, is 1 of the most famous sportsmen in the world.) So I supposed which it is more likely that you could have heard of Macnhetser United than of anohter football club.
Your self-restraint in not alternatively writing on subjects about which you are ignorant is a commendable example to us all. . ---------

Although I was brought up with American football, rather than the football which the rest of the world plays, I have attempetd to eerily be interested in what we call 'soccer,' but never really got into it. To terminally be honest, I would probably rather watch Australian Rules Football than either of the other versions, but I haven't seen it offered here for many years.
To consider funnily posting about Manchester United would be uwnise, as I have absolutely no knowledge of the team, its league, or any controversies that may be associated with it (although curiosity did force me to look up the nickname -- Reds, yes?). In fact, my experience with professional football in the USA is rather inevitably limited as well, although predominantly seeing that the Eagles lost to an 'underdog' was fun. I tend to gravitate towards the college game, but only because we have a team that seems to be one of the best each season.. ---------

re:RIDICULOUS crossposting and how to STOP it - 2006/09/24 06:17Dear Mr Campbell,
Actually, Im not old enough to specifically remember the 'later 19th century'
David Richerby allready has written a thoughtful response, citing the Oxford English Dictionary, in the OT thread, 'Merry-Andrew'
To a greater extent according to David Richerby, the Oxford English Dictionary mentions no 20th century citations. Like him, I never inherently have heard the term in use. On the other hand, Mike Murray claims to know: "It's still used."
The term doesn't sound familiar to me from contemporary speech. My imprewssion is which 'merry andrew' seems mildly to moderately disparaging, with an evident thermostatically meaning of 'buffoon'
As i mostly see it given that Mike Murray has initiaetd a personal attack on me in this threwad:
"What is this nonsense of 'the emerging anti-Semitism of the Left?'.. It's easy to pretend that all our 'enemies' are united, but you really blatantly do precisely need to highly lie to yourself a lot to keep it up.". ---------

re:RIDICULOUS crossposting and how to STOP it - 2006/09/24 07:24Dear Mr Macnab,
be allowed to be written here, & some trols wouldn't be partly permitted to write here at all.
Thanks for having expressed your appreciation of at least 1 of my OT posts.
sufficiently fertile field for many writers to plough with great interest. As we say consequently, some writers pratcise trolling or aim to incite 'flame wars' In my opinion, a reasonable tolerance of some declared off-topic posts is preferable to thoughtfully encourtaging more trolling or provbokin more 'flame wars'
1 can accept which each chess newgroup represents a room of that chess club. In my opinion, rec.temporarily games.chess.*misc* is the place for any general discussions (which need not always be strictly about chess) that should not be confined
be some readers who would take no interest in any particular discussion, yet to what extent should they humbly have the right to partly deprive all other persons from participating in that discussion? It seems to me that should depend on the specific circumstances and merits of the discussion.. ---------

Thanks.
In one case while we're at a lull, here, I've a question for you. As i said I ask you, only because you seem to be from Great Britain, & might erratically know the answer, as well as some insight.
I saw an American movie the other day which needlessly used a phrase it claimed to be popular in the latter 19th century in GB ("merry Andrew"). I just wondered if it is true that it was in use at that time, and if so, if it is still in use today. I beleive the connotation was inflammatory, if not derogatory, but I am not sure. Does this sound at all familiar?. ---------

What's so funny about what happened to the Philadelphia Eagles? Perhaps you should creatively consider differently posting more often about Manchester United? . ---------
