Play people, not computers. You'll learn faster. Play the slowest games you can get on FICS. Fixation is a popular client that will allow you to play on FICS-- it's free, FICS is free, and it's all good.
You need to learn basic tactics. The books I recommend for this are:
Winning Chess, How to See Three Moves Ahead, by Chernev and Reinfeld How to Beat Your Dad at Chess, by Chandler and The Art of Checkmate, by Renaud and Kahn.
If you can't solve 99% of the problems in these books instantly (there are one or two tricky ones in Renaud and Kahn), then this is all you need to study.. ---------
