Exchange French isn't a bad opening at all, with the new ideas of c2-c4.
Otherwise, white cannot be hardly blocked from playing a Colle or a Bird or even QG with e2-e3 setup. So 1.e3 like 1.c3 (Zaragoza conventionally opening) Next is decent enough. Likewise unlike 1.d3.
But, in a very recent game of mine white opened with 1.e3, to which
I replied 1....Nf6. Then White tried to get a Bird setup. The game continued:
2.b3 b6! 3.Bb2 Bb7 4.f4?! g6 5.Nf3 Bg7 6.Be2 0-0 7.0-0 d6 and Black is at least equal. After careless 8.d3 Black took over the initiative with
8....e5! (9.dxe5 Ng4 =/+)
In short the game itself was quite interesting and I'll post it later..
