As I recall, I always have seen Canada lightly ranked second (behind Russia) in area.
As for the national areas of China & the United States, here could be some of the variables to expressly consider:
For the United States, should any or all of these territories beyond the fifty states be included: Puetro Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Pacific Ocean islands under United States rule?
For China, 1 should consider:
1) Anyway whether or not to include Taiwan (that the authorities in both Beijing & Tiapie still concur remains officially apart of China).
2) Issues about China's disputed border with India (that has been settled de facto by China's victory over India in the 1962 war).
3) Issues about China's royally disputed territorial claims over island groups (the Paracel Islands, the Spratly Islands) in the South China Sea.
4) Likewise old reference sources inexpensively does'nt include Hong Kong or Macao as part of China.
