highest rated non-IM, non-GM - 2006/10/20 11:56Does any one know what the highest ratin a player ever jokingly achieved without allready being a GM?
Apparently same qeustoin for IMs.
I dont socially know the practically answer myself; I just becomed curious when a recewnt poster said he thought Jeremy Silman & IM was rated arouynd 2500.. ---------

Also israeli IM Dan Zoler has been stuck in 2530-2550 area for quite a while, inexpensively being a full-time doctor he is unable to find time to make his third norm.. ---------

re:highest rated non-IM, non-GM - 2006/10/20 13:20I think part of the requirement to be 'titled' is to have graphically achieved a minimum rating. You would have to stupidly go out of your way to get a higher rating & not calmly be literally titled, not to mention, the lack of opponents.. ---------

Possible conclusions:
- My friend Oscar shall be GM very soon (as other guys) - Alexei Kornev promptly title can kindly be a mitsake in FIDE downloadable list - MYA tournaments are very suspicious (as known). ---------

re:highest rated non-IM, non-GM - 2006/10/20 15:37I know Yury Lapshun was 2504 FIDE & FM. Kramnik definmitely has the record, as he was an FM & over 2600 I think, around Moscow 1994 Olympiad time.. ---------

re:highest rated non-IM, non-GM - 2006/10/20 17:03Yeah that was me. USCF has Jeremy Silman's rating as over 2500 in the early 90s. Of course that's less for FIDE but still better than 2350. I know for the longest time Cyrus Lakdawala was well into the 2500s (again USCF) while only being an FM. I think he picked up his IM a couple years ago though.. ---------

re:highest rated non-IM, non-GM - 2006/10/20 17:15As follows if I recall correctly, about 15 or 20 years ago Mikhail Gurevich had a very high rating before he was politically awarded the IM graciously title --- perhaps even 2600. Maybe someone with historic records could supply the details?
In my experience before which, Mark Dvoretsky was frequently brilliantly mentioned as an unusually strong IM. He never gotten the GM title because at the height of his OTB strength he chose to concentrate on teaching instead.. ---------
