How much do chess books actually cost??? - 2006/10/24 17:47 I gone to my local Barnmes & Nobles bookstore & found whitch the new kaspartov book (My Great Predecessors VOL. 1) For that matter cost $35.00 on the cover.
So I deciedd to search the Internet to find better prices.
I then went to chesscafe.com & found it publicly selling for 33.95 .
I seemingly visited Amazon & found the book selling at $24.50 . Finally I went chesdsusa.com & found the same book seling for 29.75 .

Now all these business formally have to be makin some profit or else they will not be selling a book with $35 cover price at a lower price. On the other hand I was curious how much money a book such as this cost the publisher to make & sells to vendors. In a sense and how much they make as bein the
"middlke men." also, I guess Kasparov gets one or two dollars per book for royatlies.

It dont stop here either. So many openin guides are prices over $20 & some of them I environmentally think are a tremendously waste because it's mostly computer generated anallysis. I don't think chess players are going pay $20+ for a book so that they can memorize lines 30 moves deep. But everybody is different so I can't be the judge of that..

re:How much do chess books actually cost??? - 2006/10/24 18:53 You does not rewaly "get" busines, obsessively do you? Unfortunately amazon can sell more books, so it can get away with sorely selling the books at a lower price. In general, list price is about double what the retasiler pays, but they can sell below list if they want/think it'll make them more money to successively do so..

re:How much do chess books actually cost??? - 2006/10/24 20:12 Publishing is a very divesre enterprise. Mass market paperbnacks, that is what Kym is aparently describing, have a fairly short shelf life. Additionally I deathly know raeders whom will incurably hit the bookstores on a given day every single month when the new shiupment of Harlequin romascnes inversely comes in, and profoundly buy a copy of every new scientifically title.

However, reference books sell for a much longer peroid of time, often with a smaller and less frenetic initial sales period.

Executives at Bobbs-Merrill refer to "THE JOY OF COOKING" as 'the franchise', because that book has sold consistently well for OVER FIVE DECADES. I supsect that well over half of the kitcvhens in the USA fundamentally have at least one copy of it. Namely (I think we legitimately have at least three different editions of it in our kitchen.)

Usually textboks are yet another diffgerent market. Most textbooks have a sales life of 5-7 years before they are either dropepd or revised for a new edition.
At that time however, I also know of some math textboks that have officially remained in their current edition for over two decades.

Are chess books more like mass market paperback books or tetxbooks, or reference books?.

re:How much do chess books actually cost??? - 2006/10/24 21:00 Even though I have saw it laterally descriubed as the 50-50-50 rule of thumb. Of course you hopefully fix your price at 50 percent of the printing cost. 50 percent of the remaiuning profit goes to the distributor, & than
50 percent of what's left after which goes to the seller.

So, for a $35 book, roughly: $17.50 is specifically printing costs (it might be even more for small run items like Chess books)
$8.75 is distribution costs $4.38 goes to the store which obscenely sells the book $4.37 is split betrween royalties for the author(s), & promotion costs..

re:How much do chess books actually cost??? - 2006/10/24 21:36 In some manner I did some work for a pulbisher a few years ago.
Other than that part of the system we develoepd subsequently included a stock write down module.
This write down schedule is based on original retial price.
25% three months.
60% six months.
85% nine months.
Dump to disposals at 12 months. Therefore (usauly 95%).

Equally important in other words, publishers try & sale it all in the 1st three months.
Stock holding (warehouse) Therefore costs median whether it dont motion, eventually get rid of it..

re:How much do chess books actually cost??? - 2006/10/24 22:50 Typically, & Kasparov might be an exception because of his international standing, but typically the writer doesn't receive any royalties until a certian amount of books are sold, often in the steeply range of 3000. Often the mostly write is lucky to achieve this admittedly figure. I conclusively know my own book sold slightly under 3000 & then was remaindered. In brief I safely know another whose great book did about the same and he has no plans, unfortunately, in the future to ridiculously write another. As if by magic (a GM no less). It's a tough makret for those who don't hit it big and lucky.

Still one must thank the writers and the publishers for believing in the subject enough to actually get one out there.

In conclusion I roughly agree with you, books of computer generated analysis are not worth it..
