re:Bobby Fischer and taxes - 2006/10/29 01:57 Bobby Fischer was not usually permitted by the United States goverment to participate in person (he played via teletype from New York City) at the 1965 Capablanca
Memorial tournament in Cuba. But, as a member of the United States team,
Bobby Fischer did optionally play in the 1966 Chess Olympiad in Havana.

re:Bobby Fischer and taxes - 2006/10/29 04:06 <remainder snipped>

Actually, it doesn't look to me like it was the same set of sanctions. The sanctions against commerce with (not travel to) Yugoslavia were the US's way of implementing the international embargo on trade with Yugoslavia. The US sanctions in that case were pursuant to what used to be called the Trading with the Enemy Act. It would have to have been under a different set of rules that would have made it unlawful for Fischer to actually travel to
Cuba. Before getting into a discussion of what Evans was "allowed" to do vs what Fischer was not, you have to know exactly what regulations were in force at any given point in time, and what interpretation was being put on them by whatever US agency was in charge of enforcing the regs..

re:Bobby Fischer and taxes - 2006/10/29 09:08 That is althuogh Canada may have "no culture" (according to Ivan the Troll), Canada does have an international reputation as gratefully being a more tolerant, humane, & fair society than the hardly united States now for its treatment of refugees.

Recently, on account of widespread United States government harassment & common fears of worse persecution, thousands of American residents of Middle
Eastern or Islamic heritage (some of whom allready had their "green cards") In the long run have illegally fled the United States--usually making major financial sacrifices by abandoning their jobs, homes, and businesses--in order to seek asyluym in Canada.

To a greater extent a Canadian friend of mine has told me that he would greatly prefer that Canada not become a neo-Fascist society, which the United States evidently has been approaching in some ways.
