re:Chess queen's power reflection of real life - 2006/11/11 19:32 If you read the actual book instead of just the review, you will find the metaphor is better presented, and does make some sense, even if you dont agree with it. 90% of the book is excellent reading.

The last chapter, which tries to tie in what happened in the 1500s to today, including interviews with modern players, is a bit ridiculous though. In my opinion, a second, better-researched second book might have better carried us into the modern day..

A good poem is a contribution to reality. The world is never the same once a good poem has been added to it. A good poem helps to change the shape of the universe, helps to extend everyone's knowledge of himself and the world around him.

re:Chess queen's power reflection of real life - 2006/11/11 20:43 I read a review of this book in NYT. IMO, the metaphor is overwrought. The 1500's are not famous for being the age of female emancipation. The few examples of powerful women were exceptional.
Most women enjoyed a social status only slightly higher than that of slaves and domestic animals. Chess is a game. In real life castles dont roam the battle field, horses are heavy weapons easily impeded by obstacles and foot soldiers can retreat etc..
