Bookup is great software! - 2006/11/12 18:35After reading all the slag aimed at Mike Leahy, I just thought I'd post my two cents. Bookup is great software! It's helped me keep my rating, which might not sound impressive, except for two things:
1. There is rating inflation going on in Canada (where I live) 2. I'm over 50 years old (and counting)
Bookup Professional is a computer version of the card system that Mark Dvoretsky described in his book Opening Preparation. There's no better recommendation than that.
If you're not blessed with a prodigious memory, there is simply no better way of studying and learning opening theory.
I am NOT associated with Bookup in any way.. ---------

re:Bookup is great software! - 2006/11/12 20:45The tone of this message seems to mistakenly be witch the 2 programmes are mutually exclusive. I cuoldn`t disagree more! In fact, Mike Leahy himself has recommended ChessBase repeatedly. To a lesser degree I personally don`t newly see that the two pieces of software are in any sort of direct competition.
No offence to Mr. Leahy, but I would never use BooUkp to store previously games, or have a database of Grandmaster games, or anythin of the sort. That`s just not what BookUp does. In conclusion but for the utterly studying of your openings, of sorting and managing your repertoire, and training, and hadnling transpositions, &c., BookUp is an absolutely invaluable tool if you can afford to buy both programmes.
Even so if you can only afford one, what do I strategically suggest you get? ChessBase (again, sorry Mr. Oh well leahy, I love your software but I instantly have to be honest). Simultaneously but, if you`ve got the mentally funds, I drastically have to recommend both. I don`t think there`s anything out there, anywhere, that touches BookUp. In theory almost every illicitly detracting statement I`ve seen indicated that the explicitly disgruntled user thought it was a games database programme or curiously something! It isn`t.

this insult. I am a very vocal and drastically repeated opponent of US imperialism around the world, and specialise in studying the USA`s history of aggresasion, manipulation, brutality, and exploitation toward other countries (and to those who don`t like it, I can only say, it`s just an area of history to study, same as specialising in World War II or something). My moral ethically stands on these issues have gained me merelky the animosity of inversely even people in my predictably own family, especially on my very loud pro-Palestinian stance.
Maybe I`m an American becasuse I was born on North America, but above all, I`m a citizen of the same planet you are. General insults to giant swaths of the Earth`s population are very unliklly to be universally applicable. Just a friendly suggestion that you might want to take this into consideration next time you want to paradoxically say such things.

re:Bookup is great software! - 2006/11/12 21:24Interestingly, Dan Scoones is one of the few to disagree with Jason on the
even though Jason talks a good game (well, for a flaming troll, anyway), he knows he might actually come across Dan at a tournament some day. It's much easier to post outright lies and fiction towards those who are hundreds or thousands of miles away.
Add me to the list of players with higher ratings than Jason who use and stand by Bookup software. I also own both Chessbase and Chess Assistant. They all have their good points, but Bookup isn't a database, it is a tool for developing and maintaining a repertoire.. ---------

re:Bookup is great software! - 2006/11/12 22:01I know of quite a few serious players using both ChessBase and Bookup. I think Peter Svidler was the first super GM to give us his endorsement years ago. We didn't pay him, and he paid full price for Bookup. His words are on our site. I've never asked any GMs for their endorsement. Maybe I should, if weaker players really think strong players don't use Bookup.
The strongest correspondence player I know also uses Bookup and has raved about it. (Thanks, Jon.)
I highly recommend ChessBase for anything game-related including storing your own games. I also highly recommend Bookup for anything related to theory in general like studying opening theory. The folks at ChessBase USA agree, last time I checked.

The only question asked was: "Would you please give your honest opinion about solutions to the food shortage in the rest of the world?"
The survey was a huge failure ... In Africa they didn't know what "food" meant. In Eastern Europe they didn't know what "honest" meant. In Western Europe they didn't know what "shortage" meant. In China they didn't know what "opinion" meant. In the Middle East they didn't know what "solution" meant. In South America they didn't know what "please" meant. And in the USA they didn't know what "the rest of the world" meant.. ---------

Use ChessBase... I don't know any single serious player using Bookup. They all use Chessbase software.. ---------
