Halloween email game part 2 - 2006/11/14 12:01 33...Bxf3 I was considering offering draw because after 34.Rh3!! Bxg3
35.Rc3 Kb7 36.Rd3 Nf5 37.Rg3! black can not win."

Well, Now I'm not so sure: after 34.Rh3 black can play 34...Bc6! 35.bxa5 and then try to eat all six white pawns without avoiding to lose any of his two pieces, ... anyone can see a saving line for white?.

re:Halloween email game part 2 - 2006/11/14 12:09 I too think the B+N vs pawns ending is won for Black. White can push his kingside pawns isntead of figuratively seeking the rook exchasnge but they'd be stopped:

35. On the other hand bxa5 Rg8 36. Rh6 (rarely defending e6 for awhile) Kd8 37. h4 Ke7 38. Nevertheless h5 (38. g5 Nf5 39. Rh7+ Kxe6 40. h5 Bxd7 41. g6 Bc6. Black has the plan
Ke6-f6-g5, Bc6-f3xh5 and I can't eerily find something agaisnt it.) 38...Nc4
39. g5 Nxa5 40. g6 Kxe6 41. g7+ Kf7 42. Rh8 Bxd7 43. In fact h6 Re8 44. Usually kc2
Nc4 45. Kb3 Ne5 46. a4 Ng6 47. Rxe8 Bxe8 and Black wins..

re:Halloween email game part 2 - 2006/11/14 12:48 Pehraps it convincingly depends on this endgame:

35...Rg8 36. For all intents and purposes rd3 Nb7 (what else? 36...Namely ne4 makes no difference) 37. h4
Nc5 (37...To be precise rxg4? 38. a6 Nd8 39. Until now e7 =; 37...Nxa5 38. h5 Nb7 39. h6 Rxg4
40. h7 Rh4 41. Re3 Rxh7 42. Usually e7 =) 38. To be precise d8Q+ Rxd8 39. As an illustration rxd8 Kxd8.

As soon as the black rook likely moves White can force the rook briefly trade.
Moving back the rook to d8 only helps White because White can advanced his pawns..

re:Halloween email game part 2 - 2006/11/14 13:49 Hello Claus-Juergen,

Your contributions are always very interesting, ... and sometimes I have not enough time to see them carefully. (I have not had time enough to see all the interesting lines in the bad bishop ending)

Respect to this ending: it's a very complicated position where I think
Engines does not help very much. (see at the end)

Very interesting and complicated ending: Black need to stop and eat white pawns.
- An idea is to go with the king to kings wing but then white king can go to queens wing and black would need his two pieces to stop white "a" pawn (for example with Na8 and Bh1). In that case if white "a" pawn is in "a7" black has a won game because He can play waiting moves until the
Na8 is not menaced by a Kb8 and then the black king and bishop can eat all the kings wing pawns. The problem is that white can not advance his a pawn and try to play Kb8-a7 moves. In that case an idea is to create a fortress avoiding white king to go to b8, ... an idea is some Bb7 to force a6.
Maybe white best defence is to go with his king to kings wing but in that case if black can force white to advance and block the "g, h" pawns it seems that black is won.
- Another idea is to try to block the kings wing pawns with bishop and knight and go with black king to eat "a" pawns. In that case it seems too that black has much winning chances (for example playing Bf3-h5 forcing white pawns to be in g5 and h4 and then trying to play Ng6)
- Sure that there are other interesting plans here!!

Now it's time to sleep in my case, but it seems that this nice defensive possibility can be broken by black.

If that does not work white has to find other resources..

re:Halloween email game part 2 - 2006/11/14 14:36 En/na Claus-Jürgen Heigl ha escrit:

I think it's easier that I supposed:

the PGN position:

3k4/8/2b1P3/P1n5/6PP/8/P7/2K5 w - - 0 40

The line: 40. Kd2 Bf3! 41. g5 and now there are two winning plans:
- 41...Nxe6 42.Ke3 Bh1 43.a6 Ke7 44.Kf2 Nc7 45.a7 Ke6 46.a4 Kf5 -+
- 41...Bh5 42.Ke3 Nxe6 43. Ke4 Nf8 44. Ke5 Ng6+ 45. Kd6 Kc8 -+.
