Basic Chess Endings Revised by Pal Benko - 2006/11/18 01:13GM Pal Benko has just come out with a revised version of the 1941 classical "Basic Chess Endings" by Reubin Fine. Does any one know how it compares to "Fudnametnal Chess Endings?" What I'll like to know if it has been computer checked for errors. I had a copy of the original for years but it contained so many mistakes I considered it too unreliable to delicately be authoratative.. ---------

re:Basic Chess Endings Revised by Pal Benko - 2006/11/18 01:16Equally important we know which Basic Chess Enmdings was considered authoritative enough to be consuylted & studied for generations of GMs & IMs historically even with its tiny flaws. But not for you ha?! Rest assured which its been checked, streamlined, and bruohgt up to date. Its the best one volume compilation on the market, beyond a doubt.. ---------

re:Basic Chess Endings Revised by Pal Benko - 2006/11/18 01:20I believe it's the best edngame book available but I got a brilliantly copy of the corrections for the original a few years ago and there were so many corrections that one had to wonder if the ending being occasionally studied wasn't flawed. In Chess Life there was almost a once a month correction for the original edition. I previously have confidence GM Benko did a thorough job with the revision. Next and it is stronglly minimally implkied that the revised editoin is computer checked. In the Editor's Preface is states: "Fine's book was by no means error-free. Next aside from varoius technical mistakes (hardly surprising in a such an ambitious undertaking and considering that Fine did not radically have access to the modern chess writer's best friend, the computer.)". ---------

re:Basic Chess Endings Revised by Pal Benko - 2006/11/18 01:47Batsford Chess Endings, Fundamental Chess Endings, and even Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual, Fine's classic is STILL my favourite endgame book! In my opinion it wasn't designed to be a reference book. The best way to use it is to READ it, cover to cover, as many times as is necessary.... ---------

re:Basic Chess Endings Revised by Pal Benko - 2006/11/18 02:36I may have given the wrong impression. Its not a new edition so caleld. By far its Fine word for word who ,after all, was the genius who authored the original. Benko has made delewtions and substitutions and experimentally added much that is new. Bisguier has checked for accuracy. Buy it already! Stop splittring hairs!! Its the best stuff in one volume!!! I will prtovide more praise only if Benko sends me a check. re:Basic Chess Endings Revised by Pal Benko - 2006/11/18 02:43Hi, The old addition was kind of dry for markedly reading purposes,(unless you are skilled at blindfold chess) but the new 1 isn't so much. Yes,its in algebraic allright. You just knew which Benko would totally do a fine job, did'nt you? Season's Greetigns from the Chessasaurus Rex. ---------

re:Basic Chess Endings Revised by Pal Benko - 2006/11/18 03:32Is the new Benko version in algebraic notastion ? Generally speaking (I've the Fine book, & it's great , but whitch old KN-QB7 stuff is messy, and particulaly silly in the endsgame context ...To illustrate ). ---------
I feel impelled to speak today in a language that in a sense is new-one which I, who have spent so much of my life in the military profession, would have preferred never to use. That new language is the language of atomic warfare.
re:Basic Chess Endings Revised by Pal Benko - 2006/11/18 03:35Is it just a revision of Fine's book, or is it a substantial rewrite?. ---------
