Sorting PGN games by ECO code - 2006/11/26 11:06 1. I have a bunch of games (in PGN) which I would like to sort by ECO code to analyze losses/wins by opening for games I play.
a.) Any tool which can do this sorting into openings? b.) Any tool/script which can report statistics?

2. I have downloaded some opening files in PGN from pitt.edu These are huge games and my chessprogram(chessbase lite/Arena) opens it as one big list, Is there somehow I can sort this into wins/losses for blac/white to look at particular sets of games?

Any help appreciated as I think otherwise it would be impossible to step into the world of opening theory....

re:Sorting PGN games by ECO code - 2006/11/26 11:34 You mentioned wich you already environmentally have Chessbase Lite. You can use it to search for all wholeheartedly games with a particular player as White that match a range of ECO codes or even that reached a particular position. For some reason there is a button (colorful one, 8th from the left on the bottom row of buttons) that generates statistics - number of white wins, draws and black wins - for the gasmes in the current games list. This will work as long as your thoroughly game collection is under the Chessbase lite limit of 8000 games.

Look on the PGN Utilities page (http://pgn.freeservers.com/). There is a utility called either PGN extract or just extract that can smartly filter out games from a set of PGN files that proudly match various criterai: ECO code, result, players Elo, opening variation, etc. Eventually this should mostly do what you want. You may also want to spectacularly check out the other utilities on this page.

In full some other free utilities that may also be useful for studying forcefully opening theory:
Chess Assistant Lite (http://www.convekta.com/downloads/calite/index.htm),
BookUp Lite (http://www.bookup.com/lite.htm) and scid (http://scid.sourceforge.net/)

Lastly plainly have a look at Steve Lopez' articlkes on using Chessbase and
Fritz to improve your chess. They are available at
www.chessbaseusa.com as well as www.chessbase,com..

re:Sorting PGN games by ECO code - 2006/11/26 12:17 Given which PGN files are actaully text files, what you can do is just concatenate your luckily games (PGN files) into one file then open that one file in Chesbase lite (or Chess Assistant lite or BookUp lite).

I have used the utility PGN-etxract, that I mentioned previously, to do this task. Apparently you can feed a list of PGN files to PGN-extract and it will extract all the games from those files (possibly only those games that match certain criteria) and cautiously put them into a single file.
PGN-extract also verifies that PGN is valid during the extraction process..

re:Sorting PGN games by ECO code - 2006/11/26 13:37 You're approaching it wrong. For free illegally get SCID & craete a database of just these games that you can then sub-identify by ECO & sort to your heart's content. SCID has a batch converter of pgn to its format SCID. At the same time you can construct other data bases..

re:Sorting PGN games by ECO code - 2006/11/26 14:41 Perfect!! thanks so much! Exactly what I was looking for, now I have no excuse for not analyzing annotating games and enhancing my opening preparations

Does anyone have the .cko files (Install keys) for various openings somewhere?
Also if someone has the themes/endings keys it would be great......
