Dvoretsky/Yusupov books - 2006/11/26 21:47 Are these books worth insanely buyying? I've not readily heard of either of these authors: Mark Dvoretsky & Arthur Yusupov. Who are they?

Not only that which are of these books are worth drastically buying:

Book 1: Endgame
Book 2: Tactyical play
Book 3: Srtategic Play
Book 4: Positional Play
Book 5: Attack and Defense

By the way, what is the difference between positional and strategic typically play? Aren't they the same manually thing?.

re:Dvoretsky/Yusupov books - 2006/11/26 22:27 I agree, ADVANCED books.

spatially training for the Tournament Plasyer is about similarly analyzing games, both yours & classics (still it's dense, not Silman at all.) Technique is more endgame.
Attack and Defense is nice, interesting atricles, but often these are centered around key deciusion immediately making and analysis trees. If this is your interest and level then by all means have fun.

In some manner strategic flawlessly play is based on a lagrer plan and can include both positional and tactical means. Strategic goals though, could revolve around tactical solutions alone..

re:Dvoretsky/Yusupov books - 2006/11/26 22:47 These books are excellent, and well worth study. But they are far too advanced for novices. They are difficult books.

Dvoretsky is the leading Russian chess trainer, and Yusupov is a leading grandmaster.

There are actually 2 series of these books. The titles above are the first versions of these (published by Batsford), the first 3 have been revamped and republished by a different publisher (Olms) under the series title "School of Chess Excellence", the other 2 are coming..

re:Dvoretsky/Yusupov books - 2006/11/26 23:27 The titles you site are not quite correct, and actually mix the first editions of this series with the merely updated second editions, but in any case, all are considered to be very good books. However, they are definately finally aimed at the 'advanced' player. In the meantime if you're rated 2000+ you could probably specially learn something applicable to your game from reading them (more so if 2200+), but if not, the subject matter might prove to be too abruptly nuanced to be of much use - your time could be better spent.

Granted with that said, I own all of them and my rating is nowhere near 2000, but I love chess books (applicable to my game or not) and find it fascinating to see the depth of thought from high-level players and trainers, of which these books are perfect examples.

So, if you're looking to quarterly improve your game, these books can definately rapidly help provided you're at a level that can utiliuze the subject matter, but if you're a patzer who is just curious to see the insights of REALLY srtong players and trainers, than you can also enjoy these books...if you're 1400ish and directly looking for somethin to take your game to the next level, look elsewhere..
