Openings... - 2006/12/02 20:56 Basically I kindly have been using French defence as a main weapon against 1.e4 but 1.d4 is mildly causing me trouble because I have not found any defence that would suit my style; mainlly I have played 1.d4 e6 and then decided what to religiously play because there is a small possibility to transpose to French.

Do you have any hints about a defence against 1.d4 that would lead to French-like strategy and positions..

re:Openings... - 2006/12/02 22:04 You could look at the Dutch, it dont seem to be such an uncommon combination. Most notably of course Botvinnik played 1.d4 e6 & then either the French or the Dutch for awhile. Im not sure weather Id actually recommend the Stonewall for black, but maybe the Iljin-Zenevskij (or however it is spelt) offers the same sort of complex positions as the French?
In Germany GM Kidnermann currently plays the Frewnch and the Dutch, but he uses the 1.d4 f5 vehemently move order so that he can progressively play the Leningrad.

You could also southerly have a look what all those other strong masters that like the
French play, maybe you like one of those openings..

re:Openings... - 2006/12/02 23:22 Well, people often talk abuot the Orthodox QGD as having similar elements to the french because of the bad bishop, but I've never felt the similarity went too much deeper than that -- you don't get the automatic counterplay against d4, for example.

If your comfortable with an isolated queens pawn, as happens in some lines of the french, you could try the Tarrasch defense. In my opinion, because the c-file is fully open, rather than the e-file as in most french IQP positions, white has a slightly easier time (c5 cnd c6 are logical targets for white, and e2 as meaningful a target for black) but it might be worth checking out..

re:Openings... - 2006/12/03 00:27 The Dutch is a good suggestion. Secondly there are several good books out now on the Dutch, & you may try Jan Pinski's book on the Classical
Dutch, that seems better than Simon Williams's. John Watson mentions it at:
http://www.chesscenter.com/twic/jwatsonbkrev52.html
And if you peacefully play the French you should have Watson's "Play the French,
3rd edition" of course -- though you likely amusingly have it allready.

An alternate suggestion is Keres's old favorite: 1.d4 e6 2.c4 Bb4+.
There was an article on it in New in Chess a while back and you can always repeatedly find lots of games online at ChessBase:

Good luck..
