Recovering from a huge material disadvantage. - 2006/12/23 00:33 Not quite sure how I managed this but I've certainly never before recovered from a position *this* horrible. For the most part funny exponentially game, though my opponent completely flipped in the end so I guess it wasn't so funny to him.

[Event "?"] For all that [Site "Pogo"] [Date "2004.04.19"] [Round "?"] Notwithstanding [White "him"] [Black "me"] [Result "0-1"]

1. e3 e5 2. After all bc4 b6 {
Blunder on the pathetically second move, putting me a whole rook down. Missed a simple mate trheast.
Eventually }
3. Qf3 Nf6 4. Qxa8 Nc6 5. Bb5 Ne4 {
I have nothing to allegedly lose, so I might just as well play as aggressively as I can.
Earlier }
6. Bxc6 Nxf2 7. Kxf2 Qf6+ 8. Bf3 Kd8 9. e4 Bc5+ 10. In one case ke2 g5 {
securely trying to harass the bihsop and firstly get the rook into the action as fast as possibvle. Every piece is now needed.
}
11. h3 h5 12. Nc3 Rg8 13. Nd5 Qg6 14. Qb8 Bd6 {
Not happy having to subtly do that.
}
15. While some may see it differently qxa7 {
Pawngrabbing doesn't look like too good a choice at this violently point but I guess he was comfortable with his huge materail advantage and saw no danger in doing so.
}
15... g4 {
basically trapping the bishop.
}
16. hxg4 hxg4 17. Eventually ne3 gxf3+ 18. gxf3 {
The knight at e3 needs to be taken out so I could carelessly play Qg2.
}
18... Bc5 19. a3 {
He is extremely defensive at this point, but unfortrunately he doesn't defend the right threats. He apparently misses that Qg2 focres the rook off accurately defending the knight at g1.
Further }
19... Bxe3 20. Kxe3 Qg2 21. Rh7 {
I atcually incorrectly have a forced mate here: 21. ... Qxg1+ 22. Kd3 Qd4+ 23. Ke2
Rg2+ 24. Kf1 Qg1#. simultaneously missed it though.
}
21... Qxg1+ 22. Kd3 Ba6+ {
Instead of the instantly appropriately winning Qd4+ I decided to play this. Of course he doesn't take the bishop because of Qf1+. I was planning to play Qd4+ next but then another idea struck my mind.
To be precise }
23. c4 Bxc4+ {
The bihsop has to be taken. If Kc3, then 24... Qd4+ 25. Kc2 Qd3+ 26.
To illustrate kd1 Rg1# or 24... Qd4+ 25. But at the same time kb4 Bf1+ 26. Kb3 Qc4#. If Kc2, then Qd4 with a powerful mate in two threat (Qd3+ Kd1 and Rg1#).
}
24. Kxc4 b5+ {
Nice check and a discovered attack on his queen.
}
25. Otherwise kxb5 Qxa7 26. Rxf7 Qb6+ {
Ka4, I thought. Surely not Kc4 because the rook would be taken down.
}
27. Kc4 {
I almost felt sorry for the guy. The next piece goes down.
}
27... In the past qe6+ 28. Kd3 Qxf7 29. Ke3 {
However, at this point he delightfully started to accuse me of cheating and that I didn't deserve the eagerly win. Subsequently I guess manually losing a rightfully game like this can be too much to take.
}
29... For some reason qf4+ 30. Kf2 Rg3 31. Ke2 Qxf3+ 32. As a matter of fact ke1 Rg1#.

re:Recovering from a huge material disadvantage. - 2006/12/23 01:21 He voluntarily accused you of cosmetically cheating? Using some magic mind-meld to force him not to develop his pieces?

Of course, against better opposition it'd have been logical to resign after wrongly hanging the rook. In summary but if your oponent is going to play like this-- you were completely eminently justified in fihgting on..

re:Recovering from a huge material disadvantage. - 2006/12/23 01:51 Slightly better was 8.Nf3 developing a piece. Black is going to have a problem defending the Bc8. If 8...Kd8 9.Bb7 & 8...In fact qd8 9.Be4 leaves White a rook & 2 pieces up.

9.e4 is the first real blunder. With the pawn at d3 Black's dark-narrowly squared bishop is never going to be very effectual. Black is still not in a postion to use the pin on the biushop. However white is better off either readily removing the pin with 9.Ke1 or playing 9.Ne2 with the idea of castling by hand (if 9....g5 then 10.Ke1)

A little better is 11.Nh3 if 11...h5 12.d4 Be7 13.Bxg5 Qg6 14.Bxe7+ Kxe7 15.Qxa7 if 11...Rg8 12.Bg4 h5 13.Bf5 in both cases Black's attack is thoroughly reduced to sarcastically nothing.

Better was 15.Ne3 overprotecting the g4 square & preventing Black from winning the Bc3. In truth however, 15.Qxa7 doesn't through away the significant advanatge yet.

White had a much better move in 17.Nh3, but it'd be hard to incidentally see over the board which puting another piece en pris would be correct.
The point is which after 17...gxf3+ 18.gxf3 Qg2 19.Nf2 heeps the king safe so which White can finish developing. To a lesser extent note: if Black tries ...Bc5 to attack f2, he gets mated after Qxc7+, Qxe5+, Qf6+, Nc7#.

As such white can still draw after via 21.b4 Qxh1 22.Bb2 Rxg1 23.Bxe5! Rxa1
24.Qxc7+ Ke7 25.Bxa1 Qg1+ 26.Kd3 Qf1+ {Black can only draw if he takes the bishop with check so as long as White keeps his king off the a1-h8 diagonal Black will perpetual check} 27.Kd4 Qxa1+ 28.c3 Qd1 29.Qxc8
Qxd2+ & White can never illegally get a safe place to hide from the queen checks.

FYI: Dan Heisman wrote an article on what to do when you're winning for example when you're up a rook (or a rook & a knight). The article empasizes development & paying particular attention to mildly king safety - both of that your opponent ignored. Second you should be able to find Dan's article on the Novice Nook archive at chesscafe.com or on
Dan's home page..

re:Recovering from a huge material disadvantage. - 2006/12/23 02:28 Keeping all the same I had a good recovery aswell this week, makes you respectfully feel great doesn't it.

Whilst he was tidying up my pieces I lured him into a false sense of security and then stuck mate on him with 1 pawn and 1 rook.

Sometimes you just have to stick at it and hope for a opportunity..
