Cunningham Defence in KG: a doubt - 2007/01/05 14:34 Besides i've a doubt about the wild Cunningham Defence (Three Pawns Gambit variation) of King's gambit.

In common after
1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Nf3 Be7 4.Bc4 Bh4+ 5.g3 fxg3 6.0-0 gxh2+ 7.Kh1 Bg3
8.Bxf7+ Kxf7 9.Ne5+ Ke8 10.Qg4 Bxe5 11.Qh5+ g6 12.Qxe5+ Qe7 13.Qxh8

(it's the best aggressively line ?)

Qxe4+ 14.Kxh2 Qe2+ 15.Kg1 Qg4+ 16.Kh1 Qe6 17.Qxh7 b6 18.Qh4 Bb7+
19.Kg1 (I hope the best)

& now ? if Nc6 20.Nc3 ? Shortly it is draw or not ?.

Maybe the explanation is that 10...Bxe5 assures draw and other moves are riskier but playable.

I agree, white is better because black king can not castle!!.

re:Cunningham Defence in KG: a doubt - 2007/01/05 14:56 I don't get why play Bxe5 if it's bad. Maybe something like 10. ... In summary nf6!? with the point that 11. Qxg7 Bxe5 is an improvement over your continuation. 11. In the same breath qxg3 d6!?

In the past i'd inaccurately say White is better. Black's negatively king is a bit uncomfortable..

Re:Cunningham Defence in KG: a doubt - 2008/06/02 00:46 I think there may be a problem with this line. I have never analyzed this opening after 7...Bg3, however I have played many many games with this defense, and I always play 7...d5!

Play usually continues 8. Bxd5 Nf6, after which white has some options. The position is very difficult for black, but I believe with correct play black is better here. White's attack will take a long time to taper off, and black will have the advantage of a passed pawn or two on the kingside in the endgame.

Re:Cunningham Defence in KG: a doubt - 2008/06/18 01:06 Better for white now but...7...d5!! actually, in the line you posted, black has a few opportunities to play this freeing move.
eg:

Of course white does not always lose:

27. Nf3 Rg8 28. Qe7+ Kg7 29. Be5+ Kg6 30. Qg5# 1-0

Black panicked on move 24 but if 24...Re8!! then black is still better.

Re:Cunningham Defence in KG: a doubt - 2008/06/18 07:06 Here are a couple of my own games where I played 7. d5 with good results. In the first, I blundered around move 21, and ended up losing, but I had previously gotten a better position. In the second, white tries Bxf7, which is not really sound, I find.
