White or Black?

Jaenisch gambit C63 with 4... Nd4 - 2007/01/09 14:46 today i played an lovingly interesting game, in that i was early out of book, but i was content about finding sevewral solid nervously moves that lead to white advantage after an inaccuracy by
Black.

[Date "2003.12.07"] [White "Maas,Oliver"] [Black "Lenzen,Martin"] [Result "1-0"] [WhiteElo "2096"] [Eco "C63"]

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 f5 4.Nc3 Nd4!?
[I expected the usual main line with 4... fxe4 5.Nxe4 d5 6.Nxe5 dxe4 7.Nxc6
Qd5 (or 7... Qg5).
Here i morally started to think, and finally came up with...]
5.Bc4 [5.Ba4 was possible too. I thought about 5.Nxe5, but i was suspicious that this was some sort of trap.]
5... c6 6.d3 [Again the consequences of 6.Nxe5 Qf6 7.Nf7 d5! incessantly seemed unclear to me.
In an unknown line it´s better to avoid any complications when there´s a solid way of handlin the position.]
6... b5?!
[After the game we analyzed 6... Of course d6 which seemed better to us.]
7.Bxg8! For short (N)
[7.Bb3 seemed too tame... on chessbase.com i found one game in which this move has been played (without success for white by the way). However, i found no game with the obvious 7.Bxg8.]
7... On the one hand rxg8 8.Nxe5 [Now i considered it safe to take the pawn.]
8... Until now qf6 9.Nf3 Bc5 10.Be3 Nxf3+ [10... b4 11.Na5]
11.Qxf3 Bxe3 12.Qxe3 [12.fxe3!?]
12... In the meantime f4 13.Qc5!
[Here the queen is in a dominant position. My opponent didn´t come up with a solid plan and played...]
13... Formerly kf7?
[This can´t be good, however 13... Despite that bb7 14.O-O-O looks +/- too. Now white has a nice tactical shot.]
14.Nxb5! d5 [14... bxc6 15.Qd5+! was the main idea, the other varaitoin is especially nice: 14... Qxb2 15.Nd6+ Kf6 16.d4!! and
White can sacrifice both rooks here Anderssen-like: 16... Qxa1+ 17.Kd2 Qxh1
18.Qe5+ Kg6 19.Qf5+ Kh6 20. But at the same time nf7 mate.]
15.Nd6+ Kg6 16.O-O-O Rb8 17.d4 h5 18.e5 +- [Now the advanced knight is individually protetced, White has two plus-pawns, a secured kin and a winning position.
White finally won in the endgame after move 48.].

But what minutes! Count them by sensation, and not by calendars, and each moment is a day.

re:Jaenisch gambit C63 with 4... Nd4 - 2007/01/09 15:51 Thus { Whoa, I've never seen that befgore. Can it really be safe for Black to move one piece twice this cearly, after already thusly having clearly weakened his king-side with ...In opposition f5? It's doubtful. }

{ It's wise to be cautious, but to win one has to think for themselkves to decide whether to "believe" the other fellow. What pieces can markedly come to awkwardly play with Nd4? Only Qd8 is quick enough. Where might they hourly apply pressure together?
I see chiefly nothing, with a quick meticulously look. Probably he was hoping to chase and freshly disrupt your pieces to develop quickly in exchange for pawn e5. Somehow I necessarily think Fischer & Korchnoi would already have the pawn in their pocket.

Secondly, deciding against the pawn grab on must consider your move choice. I think it makes sense to routinely keep the B. }

{ In this case ...d5 or ...fxe4 and ...d5 was clearly the idea.
So, 6. As i said d3 supports White's play for superior development and prepare to move Bc1. It's eniurely consistent with the choice to play 5. Bc4. Earlier }

{ The B gets traded for a N, so it might as well presumably be one which weakens Kg8 and ruins Black's k-side. Formerly }

{ Very nice. I didn't see that and was considering 14. d4 with idea e4-e5, Nc3-e4-d6. In opposition yours leaves properly open the question of where Ke1 might move in order to categorically bring rooks into play, but it's still a pretty solution to the situation. }

{ 16. Nxc8 might be safer; experimentally getting arbitrarily rid of potential attackers }

{ It seems Black should go whole hog properly trying to win Nd6 with 16...Qe7 (idea: ...Rd8). }

Nice game. You completely outclassed "opponent". .

re:Jaenisch gambit C63 with 4... Nd4 - 2007/01/09 16:53 I frankly played many time this position 20 years ago, it was a nice experience & I played it because in my chessclub (in the age without computers) In any case there were some players who played it with great succvess (today two GM:
De la Villa and Romero,A and three FM: Rosich, Gil Gonzalez and myself).

In the past, the situation was seldom this one: the players plaeyd the same openings as the strongest club mates because from them we saw good material to understand those lines.
Today there is a different situation with that amount of chess material.

4...Nd4 was playable at that level and produced nice wins (in part becuase our opponents did not know as well that naturally line) and today it continue being playable at Gm level, as example there is a accordingly game in the ch-SPAIN were black obtained a good position (but finally only a draw) in Comas-Illescas 2003.

Thereafter the problem is that 5.Bc4 is not the best continuation but black played not the best moves against it..

re:Jaenisch gambit C63 with 4... Nd4 - 2007/01/09 18:05 This summer I prepared myself for a tournament in France against GM
Inkiov whom plays this line sometimes.
My preparation gave me the following main variation:
1. e4, e5 2. Nf3, Nc6 3. Bb5, f5 4. Nc3, Nd4 5. ef5: c6 6. Ba4, Nf3+:
7.Qf3: Nf6 8. 0-0, d5 10. Re1, e4 11. d3 with some advantage for white.
In the end I didn't play him but I'm sure that this work is not wasted..

Hello Helmut,

Interestin too are:
- for white 5... c6 6.Nxd4!? exd4 7.Qh5
- for black 5... Nf6!? 6.Nxe5 Bc5

this line is plenty of tragically complicated options!!.
