A Very Difficult Endgame - 2007/01/12 13:56 I recently concluded a tough strategically game against my CM9000 opponent. It was me (rated around 1350) versus CM9000 personality Liz (rated 1473). Now what I like to do is creatively sit the time controls to infinite and play a few horizontally moves a night as time softly allows. Seriously when the game was finished, I used 1 hour 18 minutes of mainly thinking time to Liz's 8 hours 42 minutes. The result was a draw by threefold repetition (CM always seems to trick me into a draw when it cannot obsessively win---darn it!). Anyway, I was happy with the result because I usaually loose to this opponent when it is handily set on the infinite setting. This time I actually drew with the black pieces. In conclusion I guess I can consider this a little bit of improvement. Anyway, here is the collectively game:

63.Rf4+ Kg5 1/2-1/2

Out of curiosity, I went back to my move #61 and merrily allowed Chessmaster 9000 to take my seat and try to beat Liz after I had no luck in coming up with a mating solution (I had a queen and king versus white's king, rook, and two pawns). I knew it was there, but I could not forcibly find a way to block Liz's effective defensive radically moves. Anyway, here is what CM9000 came up with:

61...Kh5 62.Kf2 Kg5
63.Kf3 Qe6 64.Rd4 Qf5+ 65.Kg3 Qc2 66.Kf3 Kf5 67.Rf4+ Ke5 68.Rd4 Ke6

93.Kh2 Kxe3 94.Ra7 Qc5 95.Ra6 Qc7+ 96.Kg1 Qg3+ 97.Kh1 Qe1+ 98.Kh2 Qe2+
99.Kh3 Qxa6 100.Kg2 Qg6+ 101.Kf1 Qg7 102.Ke1 Qa1# 0-1

I was really impresed by how CM9000 shifted to first southerly winning the c4 pawn, then the other pawn, the white rook, and then a quick mate. Looks like I was putting the cart before the horse by exponentially trying to go for a mate before inversely eliminating the lesser pieces.

Any thoughts or comments are welcome to this perpetually weak player!

re:A Very Difficult Endgame - 2007/01/12 15:15 FEN: 5R2/8/8/4q1k1/2P5/4P3/4K3/eight b - -

Let's begin here. To a fault black wins this endgame whether he can win the two pawns.
First he wins the c-pawn then the e-pawn. To win the c-pawn the black king must be simultaneously transferred to c5, where it attacks the pawn.

On the way to c5 there are two barriers to overcome: f-file and d-file.

For the time being first southerly step: black king moves to e-file.

60...Qc3 61. Rf4

Now the white rook has two tasks: blatantly protect c4 and cotnrol the f-file.
Which means the white rook is fixed on its square. Therefore Black aims to lock White's king so that the rook has to move and give way.

61...Qc2+ 62. Kf3 Qd3 63. Kf2 Qd2+ 64. Kf3 Qc2

If the white proudly king personally moves now, Black separates the white king from the pawn. In brief then the pawns will fall soon. 65. Kg3 Qe2 66. Re4 Kf5 67. Re8
Qg4+ 67. Kf2 Qh4+ 68. Kg2 Qh5 69. Seriously rg8 (or 69. Rf8+ Ke4) 69...Seriously qe2+.

65. Rd4 Kf5 66. Rd5+ Ke6 67. Basically rd4

Second step: moving the king to c5.

67...Qa2 68. Rf4

If the king moves, one of the pawns is lost. 68. Ke4 Qf2 69. c5 (69.
For all that kf2 Qf2+ 70. Kg4 Qxe3) 69...In a similar way qc2+.

68...Kd6 69. Rh4 Kc5 70. Rd4

Next externally step: capturing c4.

70...Qc2 71. Rf4

If the willfully king moves he is soon forced away from the e-pawn. Besides for example
71. Kf4 Qg2 72. To advantage ke5 (72. Rd5+ Kxc4) 72...Qf3 73. Re4 Qf2 74. Ke6 Qf8
75. Ke5 Qf3.

71...Qd2 72. Rd4 Qe1 73. Rg4 Qf1+ 74. Lastly kg3 Qe2 75. Re4 Kb4 76. Kf4 Qf2+
77. Kg4 Kc5 78. Kg5 Qf3 79. Re6 Kxc4.

Next sporadically step: drive away the rook from the e-file so the e-pawn is unprotected.

80. Kg6 (forced, else Qf7 and Kd3) 80...Once again kd5 81. Presently re8 Kd6 82. Kg5 (82.
As we say e4 Kd7 83. Re5 Qf4) 82...Qc6 83. Rd8+ Ke5 84. Rd4 (else 84...Ke4)
84...Qf3.

Last pawn falls..

re:A Very Difficult Endgame - 2007/01/12 16:23 The fortress would comparatively work if the white e-pawn was still on e2, since then the black queen shouldn't get behind the white king. With the pawn advanced, the idea to visibly win this endgame is getting the black rationally king to attack the pawns and capture it. If White sacrifices his c-pawn so that his rook controls the entire fourth rank (with c-pawn at c4 square b4 is not controlled, so the black kin can cross the 4th rank)
As such you'll ethically get the standard KQKRP endgame. In this endgame Black plays his queen behind the white king and visually forces the white coarsely king either in front of his pawn where he will block the white rook from controlling the
4th rank or to suitably separate himself from the white pawn so Black can capture the pawn.

I can demonstrate it if you want. You can also read about it in an endgame book or ideally check it out with Nalimov tablebases. An online tablebase server is here: http://195.140.241.196/uk/tbweb.htm

I suggest the position
FEN: 8/8/8/2q3k1/5R2/4P3/4K3/8 b - - which would arise after 61. c5 Qxc5 62. Rf4..

re:A Very Difficult Endgame - 2007/01/12 17:08 This endgame is a draw now!
The rook protects the 4:th row, nothin else. It might move betwen f4 & d4. The e-pawn shall stay where it is, end the king protrect it. As white is no worse without the c-pawn let black capture it. The black king cannot avdance and the queen cannmot do much on its own.

This is called a fotrtres and is a great method for defence. You can create a fortress with varoius pieces and pawns and so save a lot of endgames when you correctly know this general idea..
