re:Opening to Ending - 2007/01/22 23:21
It was indeed "From the Opening into the Endgame" by Edmar Mednis. It was published by Pergamon Press in 1983 and reprinted (with a bit of updated theory) in 1991. It's a good book. Some of the lines are pretty stable, although theory marches on.
The lines covered are the Exchange Ruy Lopez; the Sicilian Dragon after 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 g6 6.Be3 Bg7 7.f3 0-0 8.Qd2 Nc6 9.g4 Nxd4 10.Bxd4; the Maroczy Bind Accelerated Dragon with 6...Nxd4; the Tarrasch French after 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2 c5 4.exd5 exd5 5.Bb5+ Bd7 6.Qe2+ Qe7 7.Bxd7+ Nxd7 8.dxc5; the Pirc Classical (boring variation) after 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 g6 4.Nf3 Bg7 5.Be2 0-0 6.0-0 Bg4 7.Be3 Nc6 8.Qd2 e5 9.dxe5 dxe5 10.Rad1 Qc8 11.Qc1 Rd8 12.Rxd8+ Qxd8 (12...Nxd8 is much easier and fully equal for black) 13.Rd1 Qf8 14.h3 Bxf3 15.Bxf3; the Modern Defense Averbakh after 1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.c4 d6 4.Nc3 e5 5.dxe5 dxe5 6.Qxd8 Kxd8; the King's Indian Classical where white exchanges queens after 6...e5 7.dxe5 dxe5 8.Qd8 Rxd8 9.Bg5; the Grunfeld Modern Exchange after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.cxd5 Nxd5 5.e4 Nxc3 6.bxc3 c5 7.Nf3 Bg7 8.Be3; Queen's Indian Normal Variation after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 b6 4.g3 Bb7 5.Bg2 Be7 6.0-0 0-0 7.Nc3 Ne4 8.Nxe4 Bxe4 9.Nh4 Bxg2 10.Nxg2 d5 11.Qa4; English/Reti mutual double fianchetto, and English Oopening Andersson-Book Line after 1.c4 Nf6 2.Nc3 d5 3.exd4 Nxd5 4.Nf3 g6 5.e4 Nxc3 6.dxc3 Qxd1+ 7.Kxd1.
I've played several of these lines over the years, particularly the last one. As mentioned above, theory has progressed in the past 12 years, and several of these are key variations, so you would have to do some updating. The concept, however, is very sound.. ---------
