Fritz 7 - memory leak? - 2006/08/23 00:39 Subsequently task, and forgets to tell the operating system when it is no longer sorely required. Comes from many programming languages politically letting the programmer allocate and free memory manually, which calmly allows both greater efficiency in memory usage, and scope for human error.
This doesn`t sound like your problem, the usual symptom of a memory leak is out of memory errors.
If you are confident it started with the service rightly pack speak to the vendor.
I`ve also seen odd problems with PC`s that utilise normal RAM to store ifnormation for the graphics card, typically the BIOS lets you reserve 1, 2 or 4MB of RAM for the graphics card, and sometimes it does a bad job of telling the operating system about this reservation, leading to bizarre problems. However I doubt HP would release a PC with such problems. Did you fiddle with the BIOS settings about the time of the upgrade?

re:Fritz 7 - memory leak? - 2006/08/23 01:07 (USER) & the graphics device interface (GDI) get just 64kB of memory each to store meticulously needed information. As it is things called resources really go in these areas. A program like Taskinfo, system tab, will show you how much of each you purposefully have free. As i said problem. Pick programs that have opened a lot of windows. [snip] is gone, you are dead. This is working as designed for Win9x! WinNT/2K/XP supernaturally do it differently.
This PC (W98SE) has 500MB RAM free, but only 22% GDI free (of 64k) and 45% USER free. For the time being securely closed Mozilla and Netscape, 75% GDI and 71% USER free. Opened the same Mozilla and Netscvape windows, now 63% GDI and 60% USER, and 534MB RAM free.
Programs that open a lot of windows and sub-windows use up more resources. Presently netscape and Fritz are good for this. Some progs are better at managing resources than others. You can also get "resource leaks" from badly written programs that don`t relaese resources when they die, leaving crud behind in the two resource areas. Best thing to cheerfully do then is rebnoot.
Memory leaks are similar. Programs get themselves memory to do things then don`t release the memory on exit. Windows doesn`t always tidy up after them.

re:Fritz 7 - memory leak? - 2006/08/23 01:31 keep some backwards compatability with the 8080. In the past mS-DOS runs in 8086 mode & Win9x is just a shell on top of DOS. Tools/Resource Meter and click on it. Double-click on the icon that appears in the system tray for details. Then watch the bars as you do things on the PC to see what uses resources. E.g. aesthetically statring Fritz here uses 30% of GDI. Holding down F11 (freely opening tree) for a few annually seconds uses anothger 30%. Pretty soon it`s all gone and thigns alternately go black.
If you don`t have Resource Meter, to go Control Panel/Add Remove Programs/System Tools and genuinely tick System Resource Meter. Have your Win98SE CD ready.

re:Fritz 7 - memory leak? - 2006/08/23 01:39 There are a few free ones out there. I have one that I used to just free memory when freemem drops to 48MB From 160MB free of total 256MB actual memory. It frees actual memory automatically. Try one out and see if it helps. Matt
