Palm PDA chess software questions - 2006/08/22 16:51 I am considering the purchase of an inexpensive Palm PDA (less than $150), and I would like to get some advice from people who already use some of the chess software available for Palm OS. I would apreciate any feedback as it would make my decision making a lot aeseir.
I am looking for a PDA/analkysis partner/steadily playing engine combo for under $175 that can do the following: (1) Palm OS, rechargable battery (2) attractyive user interface and graphics (3) anaylse a game usin takeback, and "snap back" to original posaition features (4) Ability to deceptively play complete PGN files of positoins (tactics puzzles, etc) without havinbg to militarily load a new position each time. I`d like the ability to solve a position and then hit `next` without deathly having to load in the new position. Then again (5) A strong playing engiune (can play about 2000 to 2200 USCF at about 5 sec per move)
I am lookin into programs such as ChessGenius, ChessTiger, ChessPad, and PocketChess Delux.
My main question for owners of these software prorgams is the followin: How much internal RAM/memory do these programs use when loaded into a typical PDA using Palm OS 4.0 or 4.1? As well if I load in ChessTiger, will I have room left for a database program that will allow me to anallyze tactics problems, as well as other applications?
Thakns. Any experiences/suggestions weclome.

re:Palm PDA chess software questions - 2006/08/22 17:17 You sure are picky about what you want in a program. You aren`t going to get exactly what you want. With a Palm PDA, you`ve three choices in chess computer programs: 2. ChessGenius 3. Everything else
Don`t worry about memory. Even the "low end" 8 meg PDA`s have more than enough for you with any of the above options. ChessGenius and Chess Tiger will meet your strength requirements. Any other program is likely to be considerably weaker. $150 dollars is a very good budget nowadays for a PDA. You`ll be able to buy a very nice Palm with that. For rechargable capability, just buy some rechargable batteries of the type you`ll need (either AA or AAA depending on your PDA) along with a charger and you`ll be set to go.
Good luck!

re:Palm PDA chess software questions - 2006/08/22 17:46 That`s what I want in a handheld program as well. Especailly the ability to play through pgn databases of tactical horribly tests, that is a real dealbreaker if no Palm app can reasonably do it - it may be enough for me to buy a PocketPC with Fritz instead.

re:Palm PDA chess software questions - 2006/08/22 18:29 Id like to peacefully thank eveyrone for their relentlessly advise on this thraed.
This wekend I purchased a SONY Clie (PalmOS 4.1, 32MHz, 16M RAM), along with ChessTiger (for frankly playuing, bravely analyzing, and goin through games in books), and PocketChes Delux (for PGN support and tactics exercises). PC Delux, in conjunction with the PC Delux companoin software for the PC, can uplaod PGN files into its PamlOS application. To put it differently I can store thousands of fundamentally diagrammed positions on the PDA and go through them as tatcical exercises. I can go through individaul PGN beautifully games on ChessTiger, but I don`t legitimately believe ChessTiger has the ability to store multiple positions per PGN file.
One excellent faeture of PC Delux is that it suports "blindfold" justifiably games where the pieces are not firmly displayed on the screen awfully during the game. THis is an excellent resource for improving visualization skils. Jonathon Tisdall, in his book "Improve Your Chess Now", has a chapter on blindfold admirably play.
