Positional vs Tactical Engines - 2006/08/20 23:37 For the first time can someone categorise all the popular engines (like junoir, chessmaster, fritz, shredder, crafty, tiger?) for they`re ability to play tactical & they`re abvility to play position (positional in more human style)? Sadly lets fraternally put it on a scale for the 2 parameters (Tactics and Positional): 1- very poor,2 -poor, 3- average, 4-good, 5-very good.

re:Positional vs Tactical Engines - 2006/08/21 00:08 Positional play, so the best way I can describe them is this:
I usually play the following at maximum strength settings and game times of 10-15 min.
As far as playing more human-like, Rebel Century has a reputation in this arena. I really do like the way Rebel plays. It always brings a smile to my face with the way Rebel beats me. It has a nice blend of T & P. Its sometimes hard to read what is coming next from Rebel.
From what a little bird told me: Positional would go to Fritz7 (open positions) and Nimzo (closed positions). I haven`t played either of these personally, but they are on my Christmas wish list because they have 2 playing styles that I want to face. I have played Fritz4 and it is really tough - plays positional, but does have some tactics as well. After Fritz4 I really do look forward to Fritz7.
I play regularly: Shredder is strong as its name suggests and it uses a bit of brute force, and it won`t let you slip up positionally and get away with it. (Many times have I landed in the Shredder...) I have thrown a few tactics at it and it has countered me rather soundly. It always seems to have a crafty scheme to outwit my clever plans. Its funny how it sneaks up on you sometimes. It plays chess like a Ninja. You have to have a plan to beat this one.
ChessMaster is a strong player. It can pull some good moves out of the hat. It has both T & C and the wits to put them to use. You will have to work for a win... or a terrible loss.
I have played a little against the Tigers and they are clever. You know there is a stategy behind the moves, but by the time you get a clue it is too late.
I have played some against Gandalf5 - a creative player. It seems to put a hurt on me fast. It really cranks out the strategy. It seems to have a varied playing style, doesn`t follow the usual plays. Definitely plays strong. There are sneaky tactics, leverage, counter-tactics at play here... You could really picture yourself playing Gandalf himself with this one. My brain usually hurts after playing Gandalf...
I haven`t tried Junior and haven`t been able to get enough info on it to really know what its playing style is all about. It has intrigue, but I would like to know more before considering its merits.
Tactics vary because each engine has its own approach to storming your castle. But if I had to pick between them on merits of tactics and positional, or strategy, I would have a problem choosing becuase they all are amazing. All are a quantam leap ahead of the old stuff I use to play like Sargon4 or my little Radio Shack chess computer Chess Challenger. I get a real kick out of playing against all of them.
Well that`s my 2 cents. I am not a professional or anything, really just play for the fun of it. Can`t say I know what my rating is exactly. It seems to vary depending on where I play and who grades me. As a guess I would say maybe club player strength. If I was to believe the ratings that Shredder gives me than I should be training for some competitions. I just don`t really think my ELO is 2600+ in real life. Fritz4 seems to concur, but that can`t be right. I don`t feel that clever, I still make blunderfull mistakes.
