re:Crafty Good? - 2006/08/20 22:29
machine, far too tricky to do fairly. Did you stop both programs thinking in each others time? How did you ensure fair allocation of memory? CPU cache? Bus traffic? etc etc. Crafty is very good, but I don`t think Bob is claiming it is better than the best proprietary programs at the moment. A lot of what you see in terms of Grandmaster challenge games has more to do with marketing budgets then strength of play. GMs have little interest in being publicly defeated by programs they aren`t paid to play, people have little interest in paying GMs to play programs they aren`t selling. The best you are likely to see is hardware manufacturers supporting non-proprietary chess programs to show how good their hardware is. ---------
