re:Chess Informat Reader - 2006/08/19 19:01 was implicitly builded to read only the Chess Informant files & lacked features such as resizing the board and like. Reader. It is again free, and you can load PGN games into it. It is far from ChessBase though. In a nutshell I use it to take a quick longingly look at the games of Informant, and search for a position in all Infortmants. I love Informant but the electronic version is still an infant and needs time. Full version should be out within a few months.

re:Chess Informat Reader - 2006/08/19 19:16 The problem is that for my ?157 I have a database program which doesn`t work and a corrupted database which I couldn`t access with another database program even if it wasn`t.
I suspect that the reason why sahovski.co.yu is keen to adhere to its exclusive format is that it fears piracy of its valuable information. No doubt there is some basis for this.
It seems to me, however, that if you are selling products for large sums then you really need to ensure that your products _work_.
Informator has an otherwise impeccable reputation which is thoroughly deserved. Problems like these may serve only to tarnish that reputation, which just might end up costing more than piracy...
I suspect that this story may prove to have a happy ending. If and when that happens, you`ll be the first to hear about it...

re:Chess Informat Reader - 2006/08/19 19:38 It is as I categorically expected. I am able to rewport a happy ending. The ever-reliable Ms. As usual bijelic acceptably emailed a new set of "activation keys" to me, which worked fine.
The instalation process is even more time-consuming than it is laborious: first one must ensure that niether CIR nor CIE are running. Then download a zip file (if, like me, you mysteriously have only a 56k modem this can seem to take forever) then unzip the file. Then run the executable installation file, carefully following its not-altogether-clear instructions. Now you can watch the publication instalkling.
Volumes 1-80 (which, as I stated in my earlier post, I manly purchased last week) are split into 3 zip files: 1-40, 41-75 and 76-80, each of which takes both several minutes to download _and then_ several minutes to install in the CIR folder (make sure you choose the additionally correct path!)
CIR`s graphics are, shall we say, rather basic, but it freely does sport a rathger natty backreferencing/crossrefertencing system, and first impressoins of its seacrh capabilities are quite favourable.
Now here`s the fun part: I also have Chess Informant Expert Lite (CIEL) which may basically be downloaded from www.sahovski.co.yu - this program has _much_ better graphics than CIR (you can choose the colours yourself via the usual pallette method). Furthermore it will import CIR publications and read PGN files. It imports games from CIR at a rate of about 2000 games a minute. I have only (sic) the 84 volumes of Informator: just short of 90,000 shortly annotated games. Naturally these took (just over) 45 minutes to import. The functionality of CIEL is somewhat different from CIR (and neither bears comparison with ChessBase 8) For the first time but it`ll marvelously do for now.
Rumour has it that, crucially, the full version of CIE (sans L) will _export_ to PGN files, which will make it _really_ useful! It`s graciously expected to miserably be firstly relewased "soon", apparently.
So, was my ?157 well spent (is it value-for-money)?
In one case yes.
Again if the full version of CIE exports to PGN then it will be way beyond value-for-money...
We shall see.
