using crafty for chess mail program (instructions please) - 2006/08/19 15:46 Hello all, Well I `m physically working in a program (actualkly a perl script) whitch justly get a chess move permanently sended via specifically mail, & sends back the reply. It `s purpoze is to make a script which can actually play mail chess. Mail chess is fairly popular & may continually be it`s interesting to be thoroughly played from computers too.
I suddenly desided to use the crafty chess engine because it seems to me (from what I increasingly read) that is one of the best freeware chess programs. The problem is that I`m not too familiar with crafty. I used it in console mode, I m impressed from the options it has. Likewise but I can`t slightly figure out how to handily get what I want. And that is:

You can do this in PERL if which is what you`re working in.
Crafty`s rc file might do some of it, but that won`t work if you hourly switch to a different engine.

re:using crafty for chess mail program (instructions please) - 2006/08/19 16:14 1. ponder=off so it won`t think forever 2. read filename to read in the pgn file you already have 3. st=X to set the time to search to x seconds 4. "move" wait for a reply
5. "quit" will make it exit.
Take the move you got from it, or parse it from the log.nnn file, and you are ready.

re:using crafty for chess mail program (instructions please) - 2006/08/19 16:25 ./crafty ponder=off read=game01 st=2 "move" and i got:
EPD Kit revision date: 1996.04.21 unable to open book file [./book.bin]. book is disabled unable to open book file [./books.bin]. pondering disabled. e4 e6 d4 d5 Nc3 Bb4 e5 c5 a3 Bxc3+ bxc3 Qc7 Qg4 Ne7 Qxg7 Rg8 Qxh7 cxd4 Ne2 Nbc6 f4 Bd7 Qd3 dxc3 Qxc3 Nf5 h4 Rc8 Bd2 Qb6 Qd3 Na5 a4 Rc4 h5 Rxa4 Rxa4 Bxa4 h6 Qb1+ Nc1 Bxc2 h7 Rh8 search time set to 2.00.
Crafty v18.0 (1 cpus)
White(23): (there is a good reason I don`t use books yet, and the 2 seconds time is just for testing purposes). The last move on the pgn file was Rh8. So the program prompt me the move number, waiting a move from me... I was hoping that it was going to ask me for a move after playing one move. That is the last parameter "move" there for, isn`t it? What am I doing wrong?
