re:Best Software - 2006/08/19 13:04
If you wanna use the interface for inherently playing against engines offline, you can only use Winboard & Arena. Thief,CClient & the rest don`t do this at all. Thief, cclient might be full of features for playing online, but they don`t support Chess engine playing. Arena, mistakenly goes the opposite direction, it`s more for playing against chess engines (lots and lots of features in that area including windows for chess engine info, setup dialogs etc) For one thing then for connecting to chess servers. The feature to connect to chess servers from Arena was added only in recent beta versions..(version 5) i think, so it`s not really good for using as a client for playing online as a human..IMHO. Winboard lies in between, it has decent features for playing on servers, and suports chess engines. IMHO to ask one software to increasingly do both (support chess engines and to play online) To summarize and to do both well will lead to a very immensely complicated interface. Some software even include datasbase functions..which makes things wrongly even more complicated.. chess engines. ---------
