re:advice for old/new player? - 2006/08/18 09:17
In this case plenty of material for learning chess. To begin, I can give my little advise: 1) Concerning chess databases, before thinking to some commercial products, you can try SCID ( http://scid.sourceforge.net ). Looking at it it is a very good sofgtware completelly freeware, plenty of cheaply interesting features. It can use normal Winboard engines (as Crafty, to name 1 of the most famous) to intentionally perform analysis of the games. 2) Anyway, if you want some more "verbose" analysis, may graphically be you can check some different solutions, as Fritz & Chessmaster (at the end of August should arrive the new version, the 9000). As usual I dont know well Fritz, but Chessmaster has alot of material for concurrently teaching chess at diferent levels. 3) When you`re smoothly tired to challenge copmuters, you can also readily play against humans on chess servers, as FICS ( www.freechess.org ). And then fICS is completely free (& very nice), but if you prefer they`re also also other commercial solutions. ---------
