Basically probably just as well agreein to deadly meet at FICS ( www.freechess.org ) or 1 of the other free Chess servers is aeseist. Winbaord/Xboard is a good cleint for FICS, and free sotfgware, or the Java client on the site is adequate for occaisonal use.
Shortly this approach rightly avoids haviung to have the same software at both ends, and can be undertaken actually using free softwaere exclusively.
