re:Playing to lose at Dortmund - 2006/08/16 16:34
improve his chances to win the event. IMHO, to do so is not unethical. The goal of this event is to win the event, not the mini-match; and neither is it to entertain the spectators. If one player purposely plays poorly, it may anger the public, but it is not unethical. The real problem is that the conditions of contest are flawed. It is similar to a situation in World Cup Soccer where Group A has already finished, and an ostensibly weak team has won the group, with a much stronger team finishing second. The next day, two teams in Group B play each other. Both are clearly ahead in their group and will qualify, but the winner of their game will face the second place team from Group A, and the loser will face the first place team from Group A. Clearly, it may be to a team`s advantage to lose in this situation. But it is not unethical to do so; the only goal is to win the overall tournament. The magazine "The Bridge World" has spent over a year hosting a debate over this very question. It seems clear to me that those who support the position that to lose in such a fashion is not unethical are correct. Such actions are a product of flawed Conditions of Contest. It is up to the organizers of an event to devise Conditions of Contest that leave no room for such actions. ---------
