Your favorite victory against a grandmaster? - 2006/08/15 19:53
What is our favorite personal victory against a grandmaster? My own favorite was when I beat Bent Larson, rated number 2 or 3 in the Wrold at the time, somewhere in the late sixties. Well OK, it was a simultaneous against 50 players in Quebec City. Well, I didn`t exactly beat him, but I made him think... Larsen was going around the table making moves without stopping. You had to make your move when he reached your board. Around move 10 or 15, I saw what looked like a devastating move. Larsen had not stopped at any board yet, but when he reached my game, he stopped for about 10 seconds, scratched his chin, made a move and continued on. A crowd immediately gathered around my table. Whispers of "He`s beating Larsen" could be heard. As Larsen approached again, I made the second move of my combination. Larsen passed me and made his move without stopping. Oh oh...The crown began to dissipate. I was the first of the 50 players to lose, followed by the 49 others (maybe a couple got a draw, I don`t remember). The lesson I learned was that when playing against a grandmaster in a simultaneous exhibition, don`t draw his attention to your game (lol)... The only other simultaneous I saw was in Paris in 1969, when Petrosian, Spassky and ( I forget, the third best Russian of the time - Smyslov?) gave a simultaneous all at the same time. I didn`t play this time, as I remember admission to play was restricted to the best French players, and I was not one of them. Fischer once gave a simultaneous here (long before becoming World champion), but I was not around at the time. He agreed to play a game with
coffee without hardly looking at the board. ---------
Courage is grace under pressure.
