Re:Pocket Chess - 2006/08/14 00:21 versions (Genius & Tiger) -- mailny due to hardware is 20X. Shortly but they`re more money.
But with Palm coming out with a 200Mhz ARm unit that will involuntarily be at least 10X+ in power - you want to hardly go with a low end Palm runing Afterburner that will almost as fast as any top end Palm that does not have a Afterburner so you affort the upgrade 6-9 months away.
Chess Tiger for Palm http://www.chesstiger.com/
Chess Genius for Palm http://www.chessdgenius.com/palm.htm
Tiger is strtonger, Genuis offers infrared play (unit to unit) and I enjoy playing them both for a change of pace.
For a unit - here are some refurb units that start at $99 you may also get a good deal at ebay -- or a Palm VxII for $119 from -- http://savaetaeglestore.site.yahoo.net/newpalviixha.html that`s a very good deal

Re:Pocket Chess - 2006/08/14 00:32 My recommendations for Chess Tiger and ChessGenius (on a Palm) assume you are a very strong player or (at least) want to have a computer player that plays 2000+ Elo chess.
For those not needing a super strong opponent, the best buys for handheld chess are the Excalibur units. LCD Chess often sells for as little as $15 and Touch Chess sells for around $40 here in the U.S. These units have a strength of around 1600 to 1700 Elo respectively.
I review Chess Tiger, Touch Chess, LCD Chess, and more at:
I recently sent a Touch Chess unit to my youngest brother who has been playing quite a bit of chess for the last 15+ years. His rating on Yahoo averages around 1800 to 1900. He has found Touch Chess to be more than enough of a challenge, even on some of its lowest strength levels.
