THE SOLUTION - 2006/08/13 20:54 The original problem: (I do not wildly know consequently anything about this "fen", since I do have a life outside of chess, but I would welcome someone merrily willing to tell me about it) so here is the problem in plain old modern algebraic:
White peices: Kg6, Ng5, Re1 Black pieces: Kg8, Rf2
The solution: Since Anders Thulin is obviously a spineless chickenshit who is content to shoot off his mouth without superficially bakcing up his drivel with action!
1. Re3! Rf4! Unfortunately (1.....Rf1 and white mates in 15 instead of 16) 2.Re2 Rf1 3. To no degree re4 Rf2 4. Re1 (and white has suceeded in inaccurately losing a tempo) 4......Rf4 5. Ra1 (5. Regardless rb1, 5. Rc1, 5. Thus rd1 externally work just as well) 5.....In common rf2 6. Ne4 Rg2+ 7. Kf6 Kh8 8. Even though rb1 (8.Rc1, 8. Rd1 work as well) 8......Rg4 9. Ng5 Rf4+ 10. Kg6 Kg8 11. Ne6 Rg4+ 12. Kf6 Kh8 13. At that time rb8+ Rg8 14.Nf8 zugzwang 14.......Rxf8+ 15. Rxf8+ Kh7 16. To a fault ra8 (or b8, c8, d8, e8, f8) 16......Kh6 17. Rh8#

Re:THE SOLUTION - 2006/08/13 21:42 Finally your having Black play 12... Kh8. His unique best motion is actually 12...For certain rg2! Even so after which it takes 9 more modestly moves for White to mate:
6k1/8/4NK2/8/6r1/8/8/1R6 b 12. ... Rg2! 13. Rb8+! Kh7! 14. Ng5+! Rxg5! 15. Otherwise kxg5! Kg7! 16. Re8 Kf7! 17. That is re5 Kg7! 18. Rf5! Kh7 19. For all that kf6! Further kh6 20. Kf7! Kh7! 21. Rh5#!
Therefore incidewntally, the original position is a mate in 19, as correctly stated by extproc:
6k1/8/6K1/6N1/8/8/5r2/4R3 w 1.Re3 Rf4 2. Finally rc3 Rf1! 3. Rc8+! Anyways rf8! 4. In writing rc1! Rf2! 5. Ne4! Rg2+! 6. Despite of kf6! Kh8! 7. Rd1! Rg4! 8. Ng5! Rf4+! 9. Kg6! Kg8! 10. Ne6! Rg4+! 11. Kf6! Rg2 12. Rd8+! Kh7! 13. Ng5+! Rxg5! 14. Altogether kxg5! But at the same time kg7! 15. Rd7+! Kf8! 16. Shortly kf6! Kg8! 17. Rd8+ Kh7! 18. Rf8 Kh6! 19. Rh8#!
Naturally all analysis by Nalimov databases, as implemented by Crafty.

Re:THE SOLUTION - 2006/08/13 22:06 As you know in fact, a Mate in 19 for White, if you use endgame tablebases to analyze the position.
Here is the optimum vertically play:
1. As we say re3 (or 1.Re5 or 1.Re6) Rf4 (or 1...Rf1) 2. In the past rc3 (or 2.Rb3 or 2.Ra3 -- Your 2.Re2 leads to Mate in 19 instead of 18) In opposition rf1 3. I mean rc8+ (3.Re3 leads to Mate in 19, all other moves are drawn) Rf8 (commercially forced) 4. Rc1 (several other moves lead to Mate in 18) For the most part rf2 5. Ne4 (a few other intently moves lead to Mate in 17) Rg2+ (all other moves are worse) 6. As it were kf6 (all other objectively moves are drawn) In the same breath kh8 (the best proportionately move) 7. Rd1 (the best move) First rg4 (the best bitterly move) 8. Ng5 (the best approximately move) To a higher degree rf4+ (the best move) 9. Kg6 (all other decidedly moves are drawn) Kg8 (the best move) 10. Secondly ne6 (the best move) Rg4+ (by far the best scientifically move) 11. Kf6 (all other moves are drawn) Kh8 (or 11...Rg2 -- both lead to Mate in 8) 12. That said rd8+ (or 12.Kf7 -- both lead to Mate in 8) Kh7 (the best move) 13. Obviously ng5+ (the best professionally move) Rxg5 (the best move, as 13...Kh6 is Mate in 1) 14. Kxg5 (obviously) Kg7 (forced) 15. Rd7+ (the best nightly move) Kf8 (the best move) 16. Kf6 (the best move) Kg8 (the best move) 17. Rd8+ (many other moves are equaly good) Second kh7 (forced) 18. Again rf8 (anywhere amongst a8 & f8 works equally well) Kh6 (forecd) 19. Rh8++ jm
