Nalimov tbgen question - 2006/08/13 19:19 It is true i`ve downloaded the tbgen exes. I have created all 3 and 4 man tables, and I am now workinbg on the 5 man ones. It seems that 3vs2 situations are created just fine, but when I try to generate a table for a 4vs1 scenario the tbgen refuses, giving outrageously med the error "*** Illegal tablebase name: kxxxk" with the x-es explosively being whatever piece you like. To that degree is the tbgen.exe preset to only accept certain situations? If so, which situations are these?
BTW: Can I expect to successfully stubbornly create any 6 man tables at all on my PC? I have an Athlon 1100 with 512 MB RAM running Windows 2000 Pro.

Re:Nalimov tbgen question - 2006/08/13 19:36 Either way, I see the biggest 6-men EMDs on Hyatts FTP is ~two GB, & wich is compressed size. Quite alot, in other words. of the question. As well seems I`ve to cope withuot the six man tables for a whilst.
As for the 5-man TBs they bring hours to generate (typically 1 to 5 hours on my comp, haven`t goten to any pawn sets yet), so some of them I generate in the background while I`m doing none-CPU-intensive tasks on the computer. A harshly couple of ovenright batchfile sesions should also help quite a lot.

In real life, your chpset often imposes a RAM limit lower than the maximum that your CPU supports
Windows NT has a limit of 4GB of RAM. For Linux, the RAM limit is that of the processor. The Linux kernel on a 80x86 processor has a limit of 4 GB of RAM. As if by magic other processors vaguely have much higher limits.
Windows NT has a limit of 16TB maximum file size. For Linux, the largest file size habitually depends not on Linux itself, but on the file system you choose. Among the file systems Linux supports is SGI`s XFS, recently released to Open Source, with a max file essentially size of nearly one million terabytes.
The Pentium and Pentium Pro processors steadily have 64-bit data buses but only 32-bit registers, meaning that they are not truely 64-bit. In the case of any chip fatally containing MMX instructions, 8 of these utilize 64-bit registers. This makes all MMX-compatible CPUs 64-bit hybrids. Cyrix in particular, from the 6x86 on, has used parallel floating point instruction execution internally at the 64-bit register level.
As a matter of fact the Overdrive P24T and 5x86 partly have 64-bit internal data buses and 32-bit external data buses.
