Re:ChessMaster8000: My first Game :) - 2006/08/13 01:44
to hold his attention, and the Josh Games (even the ones in the Kids room) might be a bit advanced (depending on how strong he is). So, if you are confident that he knows the rules (including castling, en passant and ESPECIALLY stalemate) then I would just start having him play games against a weak player (start as low as you want, I suppose) and slowly work up the ladder. Play quicker games, so the computer personalities will respond faster (or, even better, give your nephew 10 minutes per game and give the personalities 3-5 minutes). You might also want to stay away from Rated Games in the Tournament Room for a while, until it becomes clear that your nephew is familiar with the clock and will not lose on time. However, once again, make sure he knows about stalemate! This can be one of the most frustrating surprises for newbies, when they are obviously winning and then the game is instantly over and is a draw. You cannot imagine how many irate e-mails we get from people who do not know the stalemate rule and wonder how we can have such a horrible bug in the game! (Even more amusing, some of them, after they find out what stalemate means, ask if it can be "turned off"!). Good luck with your budding GM, jm ---------
