Re:Chessmaster and NT - 2006/08/13 00:34
CM8k has some bugs in Windows 2000. It ran OK on my first Win2k machine, but on the second one I hit the "Chessmaster only" bug which made tournament mode unusable. So, Your Machine May Vary. I agree it`s really strange that Win2k isn`t supported when there is such a large user base out there. A great many PC users who have to rely on their machines for any serious business or development use are running WinNT/Win2k and I bet that includes a good percentage of chess players. At my last job for example there were about 3000 WinNT/Win2k laptops in circulation, which users were allowed to install personal software on. And, anyone who listened to any of us sysadmins had NT or Win2k on their home desktops as well, and didn`t upgrade to XP. Upgrading a home machine to Win XP home version takes away the VPN which so many users at so many companies need to be able to get their email from home. And, upgrading a home machine to XP Pro is more expensive, and not always paid for by the company. A great many of those users had a few games and would have liked to be able to put more on. Something like chess is particularly good because it isn`t embarassing to have your IT department find it OK, that`s not a scientific marketing survey, but I still think it`s dumb to not support this big a piece of the market. I understand when Hasbro won`t do it, because they run mostly kid`s games. But for chess software - when all your competition supports Win2k and Win NT - I think its` a loss. `course, I`m biased, I really miss the program. But after shelling out full price for CM 8000 and not being able to use it, I`m certainly not going to buy CM9000. I`m going to wait until I find a copy to borrow or until I can get a cheap one on ebay. Or, just do without. Hmm, no chance of a linux version I suppose.... ---------
