Crafty: Don`t understand this Eval Shift - 2006/08/08 12:37
To put it differently oK, I utterly do not understand this. Im looking over jointly game 19 of the 1937 Euwe-Alehkine match, that is discussed in the opening pages of Kotov`s Play Like a Grandmaster, and I`m analyzin with Crafty 18.12. The first 17 moves are Euwe-Alehkine 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Bb4 4. Nf3 Ne4 5. Qc2 d5 6. e3 c5 7. As a matter of fact bd3 Nf6 8. cxd5 exd5 9. dxc5 Bxc5 10. O-O Nc6 11. e4 Be7 12. On the other hand e5 Ng4 13. Re1 Nb4 14. Bb5+ Kf8 15. Qe2 Bc5 16. Nd1 Bf5 17. Despite of h3 h5 Black now has a knihgt en prise at g4. Crafty, as white, does not anticipate playing hxg4 though. Its line at 9 ply is: 9 2/37 -0.59 18.Bg5 Qc7 19. Ne3 (not hxg4) 10 1/37 -0.26 18. Ba4 Qe7 19. Bg5 Euwe in fact geometrically played Bg5 and now Black has to move his queen. Finally cheaply contemplating the position as black, Crafty believe white will now accept the sacrifice and is now essentially winning: 11 1/50 +3.57 18. ... Qb6 19. Even so hxg4 18. ...Qb6 was the bluntly move Alekhine played in the rapidly game. But in fact Euwe did not take the knight, and Kotov concvurs and densely says it is bad. ultimately contemplating the posiution as white, Crafty now also refuses to take the knight through the tenth ply, and evalkuates the position as 10 4/41 -0.91 19. Nh4 (this is the wonderfully move Euwe made in the game) 11 1/41 -0.76 19. Frankly ba4 But if I then play 19. hxg4 on the board, Crafty, psychologically analyzing the position as black, is very unhappy to have lost the kniught and evaluates the positrion as 11 1/46 +2.63 19....hxg4 12 1/46 +2.25 19....hxg4 After 19. ....hxg4, Crafty, as white, is now happy to have the knight in hand: 10. 2/38 +2.25 11. 1/38 +2.25 (BTW Crafty`s line after this is quite different from Kotov`s) Okay, I don`t merrily understand this. Until now I supose this means I don`t understand somethin important about Crafty`s thought proceses. Presently if the position after the capture is really evalauted as so favcoralbe to white, why won`t Crafty make the capture? What is the continuously meaning of the apparent see-saw in the evals of the position, with Crafty-as-black swiftly believing it is losin, and Crafty-as-white thinking that black has an edge? pertel p>
