Chessbase problems - 2008/04/30 02:07
Oh yeah, I'm sure they do. Just googling "fritz sucks", you will get a ton blog entries and all kinds of hits for that. Even amazon reviews for Fritz and Chessmaster all talk about the interface in one way or another. That doesn't surprise me at all.
To be honest, there's a lot of crappy software developers out there building all kinds of shoddy software. Sure the playing strength of Fritz can beat the best 2800 GM's... and sure it the functionality is all there.... but these guys have no clue how to develop user interfaces. For the 12th version of their software, they really just need to hire a usability specialist and an interface designer to rework the whole product.
Just now, I can't even figure out how to open an online game with a PGN file I have. I don't get why it's so hard to make it File->Open Game or File->Open PGN File.
The database listing is one of the most infuriating things. The list doesn't refresh properly 60% of the time - it goes blank. I have to switch to another window and go back for the list to render properly. And it disappears constantly. It's so annoying.
And the sounds... this is just awful and amateurish. Of course, turning them off isn't all that trivial either as the options don't really make much sense (well they do, but there were much better ways to configure this stuff, not to mention where to put these settings).
Oh, and there's a nasty bug where if you ask for advice and close the window before it finishes, it locks up the program (or just click on the board before it finishes). Just odd why they didn't find this terrible bug after 11 versions.
I haven't even gone into 20 other problems. Honestly, I'd love to help them for free if they just gave me a free copy of version 12. As it stands, it's ridiculous.
Sorry for venting.
