Fritz 8 + saving a game - 2008/05/08 01:55 I have seen on this site and others that saving a game in Fritz 8 is just like saving anything else in Windows but that is not true!!! I already have a directory in Chessbase 8 called Mike's Lost Games. Now after I play a game and lose to fritz I goto "File" - "Save As" then another window pops up and I navigate to the Directory
"Mike's Lost Games". Now if this was a MS Window there would be a "SAVE" button down in the right hand corner. But instead of a "SAVE" button there is a stupid "OPEN" button. So how do you save it to that directory when there is no save button?

Dazed & Confused!

Fritz 8 + saving a game - 2008/05/10 01:35 To Dame or Karma,
This forum did nothing wrong. I am simply trying to find out how to save a game in Fritz 8. Other people have stated that to save a game in Fritz 8 is no different than saving a letter using Microsoft Word. That is not correct. Case in point: When I save a letter that I have written using MS Word and I want to save it to a folder in My Documents - lets call the folder "Work". I write the letter using MS Word. I goto "File" - "Save As" then a dialog windows pops up in order for you to navigate to where you want it saved. In this case I want to save it to a folder in "My Documents" called "Work". I navigate to the folder called "Work" in this dialog window then I click the "Save" button down in the right hand lower corner of the dialog window. And wala the letter is saved in the folder called "Work"! However in Fritz 8 when the dialog box comes up and you navigate to the folder that you want to save the game in - there is no "Save" button. Just a stupid "Open" button. And Chessbase offers no support for their products! They want to sell you the sun, moon and stars but offers no support!

What happens when you click on that "stupid open button"?

Re:Fritz 8 + saving a game - 2008/05/10 14:22 Yes, Mike that is what I would like to know as well. I know I worked once with a program (non-chess related) where I first had to open the file in order to save something in it. Perhaps this is the same?

Re:Fritz 8 + saving a game - 2008/05/10 17:39 To Dame and Karma,
Thank you both for your concern! I have of course e-mailed ChessBase with this question but after two weeks have had no reply. Dame - Yes you do always have to navigate to the folder that you want the letter or in this case the chess game saved into. Both ChessBase and Windows both work the same in this respect.
Karma - when I do navigate to the folder "Mike's Lost Games" and I click on the "Open" button: Nothing happens! Absolutely nothing! Now again by the time that I hit the "Open" button I have already navigated to the "Mike's Lost Games" folder. If this were truly like MS Windows when I hit the "Open" button it would have saved the game into that folder. But as I stated before ChessBase is nothing like MS Windows. Karma - After hitting the "Open" button which in Windows would have saved the game, I closed Fritz 8 and then opened ChessBase 8 and opened the "Mike's Lost Games" folder. There was nothing in there. The Fritz programmers do a great job of making Fritz the top Chess playing program in the world (Fritz has beaten both Kasparov + Kramnik)but they do very little in the way of making it user friendly. As a matter of fact regarding the latest program Fritz 11 that is the complaint that I see most often in the reviews, i.e. Fritz keeps increasing it's ELO rating (Fritz 11 is 80 ELO points greater than Fritz 10) but has done nothing to make it more user friendly!

Re:Fritz 8 + saving a game - 2008/05/10 21:43 I currently use Fritz 10 GUI and no longer have Fritz 8 GUI installed.
However I can't imagine there would be much difference.
I've never had any trouble saving games, so when I get a chance to interrupt my tournament between games, I'll take a look and report back to you with instructions.

Re:Fritz 8 + saving a game - 2008/05/10 23:09 You can save the game anywhere you like. All you need to do is give the game a file name after you open the folder in which you wish to save it, then click "ok" after you've checked that the game details as shown are correct.

Re:Fritz 8 + saving a game - 2008/05/11 01:18 To Graham Banks,
Thanks for helping! But again here is the problem. After I play a game against Fritz 8, I goto "File" then "Save Game As" a dialog window pops up in which I navigate to ChessBase 8 then to the Folder "Mike's Lost Games" then give it a name - there is no "OK" button. The stupid "Open" button is still there. I call it a stupid "open" button because you do not use it to navigate to the folder in which you want to save the game. In fact I cannot see a need for that "Open" button because the dialog window that pops up after you goto "File" then "Save Game As" always opens in ChessBase with all of the directories including "Mike's Lost Games". You then left click on the directory "Mike's Lost Games" name it and there sits that stupid "Open" button with no button that reads "OK" Or "Save".

Re:Fritz 8 + saving a game - 2008/05/11 02:01 Chessbase can open pgn files from any location, so try saving your games into your tournament database within Fritz or your temp folder for example.
Perhaps it's just a problem if you're trying to save it into Chessbase itself?

Re:Fritz 8 + saving a game - 2008/05/11 02:32 Hi Graham,
Yes, that is correct! Fritz will save the game in it's own database but the problem is trying to save it into Chessbase 8!
Mike

Re:Fritz 8 + saving a game - 2008/05/11 02:51 From the Chessbase 9 help file. Probably the same in your version.

Board window: File – Save (Ctrl-S) / Save as...

When you enter a game it is initially only stored in memory. Use Save or Save as to store it permanently in a database. A save window appears in which you can type in all the relevant data about the game. The game (or database text) are stored at the end of the database.

If you opened the board window (Ctrl-N) from a database window, the game is already linked to a database and can be saved there without further query. You can save it in a different database by using Save as, which produces a file selector in which you can browse for the database you want. The file selector also appears if you use Save with a game not opened in a database.

If you have loaded and modified a game, and want to store it in its original place, use Replace game.

Re:Fritz 8 + saving a game - 2008/05/11 15:29 The thing that is missing here is a new empty database needs to be made/created in that lost games folder of yours. That is why you see the open button. It wants you to open the database you want to save the games in.

From a Steve Lopez support article:

"To create a new database, just go to the File menu in the database window, select "New", and then select "Database" from the submenu. The Windows file select dialog appears. Go to the folder where you want to store the database. In the "Save as type" pulldown list, select the file format for the database. If you want Fritz to analyze your games, leave this at the default of ".cbh" -- although you can save games in .pgn and .cbf formats, you won't get all of the annotation features if you save the game into one of these formats. The filename defaults to "noname.cbh"; unless you see yourself as a Clint Eastwoodesque chess gunslinger, you'll probably want to change "noname" to something more meaningful (I use "sl-comp.cbh" to store my games against computers. I originally started to name it "losses.cbh", but I try to be optimistic about my meager chess abilities)."
