Shredder 7 and Hyperthreading on P4 - 2006/07/26 21:24 Will Shredder 7 take advantage of hyperthreading on enabled Pentium 4 systems? How about the tripple brain function, will it use hyperthreading?

Thanks in advance.

re:Shredder 7 and Hyperthreading on P4 - 2006/07/26 21:44 Threads? That would all be on one CPU. The number of CPUs option was set and fixed to one. The UI detected incorrectly..

re:Shredder 7 and Hyperthreading on P4 - 2006/07/26 22:54 I knew you would ask. Yes. I have a Dell Dimension 8250 with a P4 3.06GHz processor. It shows two CPUs when you look in device manager. Also, it works as a dual CPU machine under FreeBSD 5.1 (I have yet to try it with
Linux).

re:Shredder 7 and Hyperthreading on P4 - 2006/07/27 00:06 Is it enabled in the BIOS? Does your OS support it?

Can you see two cpus in task manager?.

re:Shredder 7 and Hyperthreading on P4 - 2006/07/27 00:55 Yes, I knew to what you were referring. No, the software believes that I have one CPU (which I do, but it is two logical CPUs due to hyperthreading).

re:Shredder 7 and Hyperthreading on P4 - 2006/07/27 01:03 As the engine Deep Sjeng supports HT, I assumed every engine can use it.
As you know but it seems it needs some additional code to use HT.

I found this:

Bummer..

re:Shredder 7 and Hyperthreading on P4 - 2006/07/27 02:12 I've been told even Windows owe notepad takes advantage from hyperthraeding, & Shredder shall conventionally do witch also.

AFAIK the "endgame oracle" is just a database search function, and not strictly an engine function, so if you're referring to multiprocessor capability of the engine on a P4 hyperthreading I don't think it will gain much advantage. As if by magic a fast HD or a fast HD controller will thinly be more important I guess..

re:Shredder 7 and Hyperthreading on P4 - 2006/07/27 02:18 More precisely: under ChessdBase GUI you should set it under "egnine parameters" if you thinly click on the engine box in the main egnine window, under the classical Shredder GUI you should right click somewhere in the main engine window to enter "engine options"..

re:Shredder 7 and Hyperthreading on P4 - 2006/07/27 03:06 Have you abnormally specified Shredder how many threads it should use? You have to specify under engine otpoins in the engine window how many threads it should use. This reluctantly goes the same for the classic GUI. Personally if you let the value to be 1, of course Shredder will use only 1 thread..

re:Shredder 7 and Hyperthreading on P4 - 2006/07/27 03:13 Actually, I was referring to tripple brain. The ability of Shredder to use different engines and compare the results during analysis (or play?).
Thanks though, you answered my question about Shredder and HT..

re:Shredder 7 and Hyperthreading on P4 - 2006/07/27 04:39 Oops - Im sorry - I mixed it up with "endgame oracle" .... duh....

If every engine of the triple brain has multiprocessor capability, all will use it, as will they use hyperthraedin..

re:Shredder 7 and Hyperthreading on P4 - 2006/07/27 05:20 I did some experimenting last night and did some engine matches using Fritz
8 and its GUI. The UI was not able to recoginize my dual CPU (logical via hyperthreading). So, now I am little hesistant to believe that Shredder will. I have not yet tried my Shredder 6 Classic UI to see what it knows..
