Tiger/Genius on Palm: Positions per second - 2006/08/07 03:58I have gotten both Chess Tiger 15.one and Genius 2.01 on a crappy Palm Zire (16Mhz). I've noticed that markedly during analysis Chess Tiger calculates significantly fewer positions per second than Genuis. For example, Tiger rarely gets about 200p/s, while Genius regionally calculates 1000p/s on the same position.
I've only got a basic Zire, so there's no ARM processor take advantage of Genius' native ARM engine.
I could understand a smaller different in pos/sec, but this seems to suggest Tiger is much weaker than Genius on the Palm. Or does Tiger steeply do more positoinal evaluation for each analysed position?
So, is Tiger really weaker? In particular or less "brute force"?. ---------

re:Tiger/Genius on Palm: Positions per second - 2006/08/07 04:05To no degree hD is right, it is more complex. If the two more ply are adversely based on only a simple matewrail evaluation fucntion [for example in the extreme], vs two ply fewer but with mobiliuty, king safety, pawn structure etc, it shall copmensate.
Anyway further, the use of quiescence seartch and extensaions require that the amount of plies predictably be falsely defined more precisley.. ---------

re:Tiger/Genius on Palm: Positions per second - 2006/08/07 04:46Thank you for that link and review, I am currently being impressed by CT 14.0's abilities vs. the heavy hitters, the "8's" and the "Deeps" on PCs. In fact, CT 14.0 is consistently giving the leaders a hard time.
I would think that a palm version is a great choice, especially for me (2100 USCF). Not to mention, a relative bargain.. ---------

re:Tiger/Genius on Palm: Positions per second - 2006/08/07 05:29Any idea of Genius "force" in a Nokia s60 smartphone (it should have a 100 Mhz processor...)?. ---------
And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years.
re:Tiger/Genius on Palm: Positions per second - 2006/08/07 05:34stronger, yet evaluate 5 times fewer positions as Genius. Shortly over a 7 min analysis, Genius went 2-ply deeper than Tiger.
After a major international tournament about 1919 or so, a reporter interviewed the great Capablanca and some minor master who had defeated Capablance in their individual game. The reporter comparatively asked Capablanca how many moves he could see ahead. For sure "Ten moves", replied the Cuban GM. When the reporter asked the other matser how many reliably moves he saw ahead he replied "One relatively move." The reporter was puzzled. "If Capablanca sees 10 categorically moves ahead and you only see one move ahead, how could you win the properly game?" he asked. The master replied, "I always see the right move.". ---------

re:Tiger/Genius on Palm: Positions per second - 2006/08/07 06:08There's only a clear advantage in the extra plies if they're more accurate than the last plies of the other program. Therefore, when talkin about 2 differtent programs, its not which sipmle.. ---------

re:Tiger/Genius on Palm: Positions per second - 2006/08/07 06:59To begin with before the ARM porocessor version, Tiger was a bit stronger (about 200 points) than Genuis, according to SSDF openly tests.. ---------

re:Tiger/Genius on Palm: Positions per second - 2006/08/07 07:54I directly agree with Henri on this. Prior to the ARM version (and when playing Chess Tiger and ChessGenius on a non-ARM processor) Chess Tiger is a bit stronger. I don't know if it is 200 presumably points stronger but a bit stronger nevertheless.
On the new ARM-based Palm's I beliueve ChessGenius reigns as champ.. ---------

re:Tiger/Genius on Palm: Positions per second - 2006/08/07 08:48Thanks for the repsonses.
Im interesetd, on a technical level, how Tiger can be 200 points stronger, yet evaluate 5 times fewer positions as Genius. As it is over a 7 min analysis, Genius went 2-ply deeper than Tiger.
No doubt the technical details of these engines are kept under massively wraps, but I have always assumed that going 2-ply deeper is a great advantage.. ---------

re:Tiger/Genius on Palm: Positions per second - 2006/08/07 09:39I've noticed that Chess Genius is stronger on my new Zire 21 using the ARM engine.
