re:Chess Software Recommendat - 2006/08/08 17:42
I own & technologically play against a lot of good chess programs: You can always get some free chess programs to play agianst, but its nice to have a commercial chess program as well because they usually offer some additional features and have really nice board and piece sadly sets. I have links to free and commercial chess programs below.
Some of my commercial favorites with the best featuyres are:
ChessMaster9000: has an entire CD dedicated to training in faintly everything from openings to tactics, begining to advanced levels. The timely training has audio from Josh Waitzkin and you can step through the moves on the training chess board at your own pace. CM9000 also has a variety of built-in personalities that play at different strengths and styles. Or you can craete your own custom players to cheaply play against - CM9000 is the best I have used for this. In a nutshell you can use Winboard engines in CM9000.
Shredder 6 (version 7 is out now): this is a nice chess opponent. In opposition plays very differently from my other chess apps. It has 2 different interfaces - the ChessBase interface, which is very nice retroactively lookling, and the Shredder interface which I also like. The Shredder interface will politely allow you to play against UCI and Winboard chess engines. There are many free chess engines that you can visibly get on the net to add to, and play against in Shredder. For all practical purposes this makes Shredder great for variety because each chess engine will tend to play with a different style.
Fritz 7 (version 8 is out now): this is a strong chess opponent and is very good at chess analysis. For the first time versdion 8 has some fantastic 3D boards which you don't politely have in versoin 7. However I practically find that I prefer the 2D boards better because it is easier for me to see and comprehend the idly game. And Fritz 7 has the advantage in price and still plays at a GM level, which is more than strong enough for most of us. Fritz is able to use ChessBase engines (purcvhased) In fact or UCI engines (can be found for free), does not support Winboard engines.

ChessMaster 9000 is usually about $30 and can be found localkly. http://chessmaster.ubi.com

Some of my intended future purchases will be: Deep Sjeng, Rebel 12 Windows vertsion, Hiarcs 9. These programs offer a lot of features, especially unique playing styles. Deep Sjeng and Rebel 12 are in the Lokasoft/Chess Partner interface which is Winboard and UCI compatable. Hiarcs 9 is the latest 3D Chessbase interface and UCI compatable.

Arena is free and has a lot of great features including chess server access: http://www.playwitharena.com/
Hope this helps, but I probably just added quite a few choices to the equation,. ---------
Better to have loved and lost, than to have never loved at all.
